The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has announced its readiness to work with Governor Siminalayi Fubara when he is reinstated to office on September 18. The party, however, emphasized that it will continue to hold the governor accountable on governance issues.

Speaking at a news briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the state APC Chairman, Chief Tony Okocha, assured that the party would strengthen its membership base while offering constructive criticism of the Fubara administration post-reinstatement. “The governor who was suspended will return to office on September 18. The APC will work with him when he returns,” Okocha stated. “However, that will not take away our right to criticise him when he does wrong. But for us, the LG chairmen will work with him, except that we will not agree to vicious policies.”

Okocha described the recently concluded local government elections as a prelude to the 2027 general elections. He revealed that the APC strategically chose not to field candidates in strongholds of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), such as Obio/Akpor, Port Harcourt City, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs, focusing instead on areas where the party held a comparative advantage. “Rivers State was a PDP state,” he noted, explaining the party’s calculated approach.

Highlighting the APC’s growing influence, Okocha contrasted the party’s position in the 2023 elections with its current status, stating, “In 2023, APC in Rivers State had no shoes. Now we are wearing psychedelic shoes.” He expressed confidence in the party’s plans to expand its membership and support President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027.

Okocha also took a swipe at the PDP, claiming it was “in tatters” with members defecting to the APC in large numbers. He urged PDP members, including the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, to join the APC for “peace.”

Fubara’s reinstatement follows his suspension by President Tinubu on March 18, after the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State due to rising political tensions and attacks on oil facilities by militants allegedly linked to the governor. Former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), was appointed as the state’s administrator for a six-month period.

Last Saturday, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, speaking to journalists after voting in the local government elections, declared that the “coast” was now clear for Fubara’s return to office.

Because they wouldn’t have dismantled fubara structures to put back Wike days ago. They won checkmate fubara. The like of Obaseki and Ngige will fight to the finish. Is was Fubara Tinubu saved. His plans were not going fine, he was about to be impeached. The Supreme Court had ruled all his so called “fine plans” illegal. The SC had ruled his budget illegal and that the suspended members must be allowed to sit and he must present his budget and commissioners to them for approval. Once they seat, he would have been 8mpeached.

Wike did not need Tinubu’s help to remove Fubara,, Fubara had already walked into Wike’s trap.
