The Federal Government has launched a mandatory Teacher Ethics and Criminal Record Verification Framework to ensure that all teachers in public and private schools undergo thorough background checks before being employed.

According to an announcement by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), the initiative is spearheaded by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.

According to the Ministry, the new framework is designed to restore professionalism and accountability in Nigeria’s education system.

Dr. Alausa explained that the initiative is aimed at entrusting the nurturing of future generations to individuals of sound moral character.

How these records will be accessed

The government confirmed that the framework will be integrated into the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal.

The Ministry added that the system will also help to curb impersonation, certificate forgery, and the employment of unqualified staff in Nigerian schools.

Late month, the TRCN launched its as part of efforts to modernize teacher registration, licensing, and monitoring. The platform was introduced to serve as a national database for teachers, enabling them to conveniently register, access their results, and print their certificates from the comfort of their homes without visiting state offices.

TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, explained that the portal would also enhance quality by integrating AI-powered lesson planning and revising the Professional Qualifying Examination from 23 subjects to five core areas, including mathematics, literacy, and pedagogy.

TRCN Registrar, explained that it would also improve teacher quality by offering state-level investigation panels. According to her, these panels will be responsible for addressing cases of misconduct and strengthening ethical standards among teachers.

What you should know

●The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria raised concern over the qualifications of the country’s teaching workforce. According to TRCN Registrar, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, Nigeria has approximately close to four million teachers, and presently, only about 2.4 million teachers have been registered with TRCN.

●He noted that what the council have observed is that in private schools, a large percentage of teachers lack the required qualifications to register with TRCN. To register with TRCN, one must have a Bachelor of Education degree or a BSc or BA degree with a PGDE or Professional Diploma in Education.

●The council, which was established by TRCN Decree N0. 31 of 1993 (now TRCN Act CAP T3 of 2004), is mandated to regulate and control the teaching profession at all levels of Nigeria’s education system.

The last time I visited a police station, I didn't see a computer. Does it mean we have an analogue police?

Nigeria Police should have a database (like WAEC) where people can buy scratch cards to get the criminal records of all Nigerians, including the president's.

In fact, there should be interministerial collaborations among the judiciary, interior, defence and police affairs to maintain the database of all Nigerians who have a criminal past.

It is politicians that should undergo this screening. Most of them are lunatics in agbada.

Height of cluelessness. Is this another achievement? The only person that needs criminal screening is "you-know-who".

Like DBS check.

But it will both be abused and corrupted.

The federal government should also look at the welfare and remuneration of teachers. They deserved to live a good life and be counted. Gone are the days when teachers rewards are said to be in heaven.
Re: FG Introduces Nationwide Criminal Record Screening Of Teachers by tunjijones(m): 7:30pm On Sep 02, 2025
Not that it's a bad idea. But I strongly feel that the police and the military should be where the govt beem light should be.

Plenty of police and military are cultists or retired cultists.

Just imagine giving a cultist or retired cultists free access to guns and fire arms.

This is the best way to go just like how it is obtainable in advanced countries. Once you have criminal records, it becomes difficult for you to secure good jobs except warehouse jobs. Infact, in most of these advanced countries, you cannot get ordinary cleaning jobs if you have criminal convictions. You cannot get Nigeria of your dream if people are bringing initiatives to make the country better while criticize everytime. Once this template work, they will extend it to other sectors. My fear is will subsequent governments continue with such especially when power returns to these northerners who doesn't value initiatives and modernization.

How is this a misplaced priority? Do you want sex offenders and other violent criminals to be having easy access to minors? This is an excellent idea and only criminals.amd ex convicts won't want it implemented

Did you get into the offices or you just stood at the reception and assumed you have seen all.
Go and steal, get caught and see if your biometrics will not be taken.
You obviously haven't done business with any reputable company because they have also been doing these verifications.
Ignorant people go just open waaaaah dey yam balls. When you hear of police tracking mobile phones you think they go to the road and start looking around for the phone.
Go and commit crime you go know if police get computers or not.
Or who do you think is providing the government with data for the screening of teachers?
You think say road safety or VIO?

Same profession with lowest wages, poor welfare?

Why not talk about improving welfare first?

Hope you won't make it compulsory for teachers to clear school grasses before resumption like a Governor some days back?

I said it before, everyone in this profession should as a matter of urgency leave it because it's totally degrading and embarrassing 😂

Why is this country like this sef?

You just want to be on opposite side of every development. If you have 5 problems and solved one you are left with 4. In Western world you cannot enter a school class without criminal record check. This is a good step

We shouldn't vet the integrity of the people in whose hands we leave our children?
Have you not been hearing of teachers raping children?
Would you like your daughter to be in the same class with a teacher who arrested for rape in one state and decided to change location?

One thing people need to know is that Nigeria is never going be better on on day or even 10 years, rather, it takes conscious and intentional efforts to steadily move the country forward, sector by section. While I'm not a mouthpiece of this government, it is important to state that this Nationwide Criminal Record Screening is akin to the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) in the UK. The DBS check reveals the criminal records, including cautions and convictions of those who teach your children at school. This helps to reduce cases of teacher vs students relationships and better protect your vulnerable children against child predators.
You may not lie the people in government but at least, understand the ideas behind political policies before making uninformed statements.
With an active DBS escue policy on place, all the reckless and predatory corpers sleeping with minors in places of deployment would have a serious rethink about their actions. Enough said for now...

It is standard practice in many countries for applicants who wants to work in children related environment to undergo thorough background checks before being employed but Nigeria don't have strong database, people just show up.

For my present job, they scrutinized my details from the age 18 up to the point of my attending the job interview as the role involves working directly with vulnerable children.

Senseless policy which doesn't talk about teachers welfare other than creating a means of siphoning teachers of their hard earned megre or peanut being given to teachers called,"salary." Until the facilitators are taken care of nothing can be facilitated.

You're not getting the fact here.... Criminal record is good, but is that the priority now? Do you know that the rate at which people apply for teaching position has drastically reduced?

Same way fuel subsidy was just removed without avenue to contain the consequences
Re: FG Introduces Nationwide Criminal Record Screening Of Teachers by Rootprof(m): 7:48pm On Sep 02, 2025
Just say you want to force teachers to register for TRCN, and generate more money for the government. Increase teachers salary and see how the profession will receive better accolades. Till then teaching job is just mere engaging of people from sitting at home and a time wasting for men.

Another way of stealing money from the government. This is the most corrupt government Nigeria has ever had.

Tomorrow this strategy will end.

Question for the day
Which corrupt senator/governor has been sent to jail.
Your answer is as good as mine
