A pure lies, majorty of doctors at federal teaching hospitals are lazy and mostly care less about the patients. I can't forget how their laziness and lack of prompt treatments lead to the death of patients.

We all are part of the government. The attentionis mostly focusedon the leaders to initiate laws to tacklemany challenges we have but heck no. Once the head is severely sick, other parts will likely falter too.

If you want things to work in Nigeria, we need a unique mix of democracy and military government. A mix of diplomacy and force.

As long as the benefits of wrongdoing outweighs the consequences, we'll never move forward. There are too many administrative bottlenecks that just won't let things work. It's not even about the politicians now, even the career civil servants. It's just annoying.

You have probably waited for doctor in a clinic before and he arrived by 10am to 11am.
What most people don't know is that,Doctors works do more than seeing you in the clinic.
They do ward rounds which you can not even tell how long it will last,Morning accademic meetings which include CME and Morbidity and mortality meetings,procedures which could be planned or unplanned.Sometimes they do these things in the morning before they show up at your bed or at the clinic while you are waiting.
Also,when you see them living the clinic by 1pm,Not as if they are going home all the time,they continue with some of these activities.

Don't mind the buzzard. As a house officer,we do ward rounds from 7am til 10 am,then go for clinic from 10am til 4pm. Then call duty from 4pm til the next day. God bless you if you have theater....

What I described is the reality of a 72hrs call. Even the bath, if you're have time, it's like a 5-10 minute shower. Not every shift will be so busy, but often you won't get the time to go off. If you take time to go far to do those things and any emergency happens, you get blamed for it by both your bosses and the patients and their relatives. Why do you think it is so exhausting that someone could die from it?

Then if they die they signed up for it no one to blame. U rather take keke and be riding than put ur self at risk.

Well, tens of thousands of doctors are inducted yearly too. Trust me, the number of migrating doctors is very negligible compared to the numbers produced.

That said, it's not easy to also migrate. The process is very tedious and cumbersome.

So, we should relax with this talk of brain drain. There are still many doctors unemployed and underemployed littered around.

You are wrong with this your statistics that Nigeria produces tens of thousands of doctors yearly. As of 2023, the total allocation of doctors to be produced by universities in Nigeria was around 2700 and these allocations are not maximized. Each university has its own allocation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria; according to available facilities and other resources. Some produce 50, some 75, some 100, etc.

Nigeria like sensations. Doctor approved their own working hours. They can always adjust it, if they feel it's no longer good for them. I know Nigeria anesthesia doctors pull out of that nonsense long working hours, whenever they finished their call, they go home. But their counterparts wants to maximize their earnings, Nigeria doctors are one of the greedy set in the country.

He might have died of exhaustion related to work stress but to say that he worked for 72-hours stretch is not correct. Even prisoners on hard labour don't work non-stop....

His goals should be blamed for the system they put in place. Yes, as bad as the Nigerian system may be the doctors and other health professionals should find a way to protect themselves but what we see is the opposite.... Who did the work rota or schedule for him?

We are not talking about extra duty,Mr.Man. We are talking call duty. One can alsays opt out of extra duties but not call duties. Try and educate yourself before embarrassing ur generation

Did I say they opt out of call duty? No, but they go home after the call instead of continuing like their other counterparts, I'm talking about federal doctors though.

The fact is that the hospital must be manned at all times, and if you don't do it, you can be prevented from moving forward in your career. The problem lies primarily with understaffing, and even then, rosters should be drawn up more fairly. Doctors need to be excused from work the day after calls, and calls should not exceed 36 hours max.

Young upcoming doctors in teaching hospitals work very long hours... A doctor can resume work this morning and go home tomorrow evening depending on the work schedule... They are usually given rooms to rest and sleep over at the hospital... Doctor work in Nigeria is not for d weak

How many of your graduated doctors are practicing? If they don't japa, they go into tech or business. I see the job boards everyday. There are still several unfilled vacancies.

We shouldn't be vexed because doctors are leaving or wanting to leave the country, or the ones still here and changing fields, an house officer/ resident makes how much? What will a man who has just started a family achieve with that amount? Definitely close to nothing going by the cost of things now, from a decent apartment to even a meal a working person deserves, add transportation, it's a big No!
Everyone should be calling out those in government, they're the ones killing the citizens, this is all due to poor funding in the health sector, we know the state our public hospitals are in, an idiot can tell why the politicians or their relations do not visit these places, the government continues to fail and the people continue to ignorantly hail.
Failings everywhere, we see how our soldiers are being wasted on our roads, under funded, underpaid and not properly armed, overpowered by bandits and terrorists, to the level where the soldiers are attacked in their own barracks.
Citizens die needlessly while we goatishly maintain partisan and religious loyalty, in the face of insecurity, widespread poverty and maternal mortality, we refuse to call out the demons in whose domains these calamities are brewed, I am not proud to say I am a healthcare professional, not practicing, in tech, if I ever decide to fall back to my papers, I'm definitely not looking at the festering Nigerian healthcare system.

I fainted one of those days cos I didn't eat for over 20 hours.. and nobody cared.
No time.

I immediately realised everything was wrong with the system,took my foreign exams and moved.

I'm at peace now, working in a saner clime.

I'm however very sad about this Dr Femi's death.
I knew him personally...He was a very respectful and lovely personality.

The very painful aspect is that he had passed his foreign exam and was just preparing to japa.

May his soul RIP.

There,you must work ..and also study.
You are undergoing training..
Some departments are worse.
I guess the people you are referring to are the consultants.
This young doctor just resumed this work only 9 months ago.
Worked for 6 months with no pay.
Just as they started paying,he passed on.

You think resident doctor is just a title?
They Work!
As in expected to RESIDE in the hospital and WORK!

If you were on call on Friday,as it was the case with this doctor,it means you will work 8am Friday to 4pm Monday .. Continuously.
I suffered it too.
I almost quit,if not for the opportunity to japa.
