Football isn’t an exam where you must wait five years for validation before grading a player’s quality. The game is judged in the present, and players are assessed by what they deliver on the pitch week in, week out. That’s why the Ballon d’Or is awarded every year. If Barcelona had won the UCL, Yamal would have been in the top 5 for the Ballon dor. Would you then say he should wait another four seasons before being considered a candidate?

Yamal’s 2024/25 season wasn’t about potential,it was about output, 17 Man of the Match awards across competitions, decisive performances in big games, and carrying Barcelona when it mattered most. That’s not hype and it's not fluke, that’s world class performance.

And look at Palmer, his brilliance in the Conference League final saved his team from defeat, and he repeated the same in the Club World Cup final. Those are world-class performances. Yes, there’s a difference between delivering a world-class performance and being a world-class player, but you cannot consistently produce world-class displays for your team without being considered world-class player.

Saying “wait five years before calling them world-class” completely misses the point. World-class status is not about future projections,it’s about current dominance. The Ballon d’Or is not awarded for what you might do in the future, but for what you are doing right now. Players rise and fall, today’s hero may fade tomorrow. That doesn’t erase the fact that they were once world-class. Haaland won nothing last season, that doesn't erase him as a wolrd class striker, there’s no one that can be champion for life, the judgment must always be based on current performance.

If you’re playing for a giant club like Barcelona, deciding big matches, and racking up awards in crucial games, then by every standard of the footballing world, you are already a world-class player.

Diaz is one of the notable mentions that guide Liverpool to the trophy last season .. In fairness, one would even say he had more impact than Salah as he always has his work rate .. someone that was deployed out of position and still thrive there .. how many of your world class player can play out of position and still thrive there ..

The concept of "world-class" is subjective. To be considered world-class, a player must have consistently performed well on the big stage, whether that’s in a top league like the EPL or La Liga, or in the UEFA Champions League (UCL), for at least two seasons. It doesn't necessarily mean they have to win the league or the competition, but they should consistently put in good performances.

Once a player meets these criteria, they can justifiably be considered world-class, as they have demonstrated their ability to compete effectively in any league or competition they participate in.

Note: I intentionally did not include the Italian Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 in this discussion, as the overall quality and competition in these leagues are currently several levels below that of the EPL and La Liga. However, players from clubs like Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, and PSG often gain their reputation based on their performances in the UCL, which is where they truly get to showcase their quality.

On a personal note, I think Hazard at his peak was world class because he did it in the EPL which is one of the top leagues around.
