Names in Nigeria carry vibes more than we admit.

When someone says “Hi, I’m Bella,” your mind immediately paints a picture.

Playful, social, maybe even soft life energy.

But when someone introduces herself as Grace, Deborah, or Esther… suddenly the tone feels different. Grace sounds calm. Deborah feels no-nonsense. Esther carries quiet confidence.

The funny thing is—it’s just a name. But perception is powerful.

A name can decide how people see you before you even say a full sentence.

Now imagine two ladies walk into a room.

One says, “Hi, I’m Bella or Precious.”

The other says, “Hi, I’m Deborah.”

Who would Nigerians instinctively take more seriously?

It’s not always fair, but it’s reality.

Names shape how we see people, avoid cheap names.

I want to argue this is untrue but can not deny the fact that you might be describing how you yourself judge people by their names, and assume most others do what you do.

Thankfully, most are not so myopic, and have learnt that "not to judge a book by its cover", can also apply to not judging humans by their names or initial appearance, and doing so says more about you than those you judge.

Being on the same social media space does not mean I should not use the brain in my head not to judge people by their names.

Your name, for instance, is King David, but that wouldn't make me associate you with a king, or David, or ignorantly assume anything about you based on what you've decided to name yourself.

I wouldn't judge you on the basis of you calling yourself Isiaka or Jesus or Mohammed neither, because names do not describe your character.
