She has to look around to find an I opportunities in the market.

1) Find out about being a distributor for fast moving consumer products. E.g cement. My mom was a senior government worker in the late 80s. She got a distributorship license for Guiness at the time. She didn’t have a shop, you wouldn’t know she was a distributor. She had a Ghanian who handled the logistics for her while she did her day job. She was making more than her salary every month and she was on the highest salary GL 16. At the time a very comfortable salary. If I didn’t know of the Ghanaian who worked for her and see her exercise book where she wrote all the figures and profits, even I wouldn’t know my Mom was a distributor for Guinness.
2) agriculture. There are so many things one can do here.
3) if you have a talent or a hobby you are good at see if it is Marketable and in demand.
4) listen when people complain about a product or a service and see how you can solve the problem and I if it is scalable. Often they are not the only ones having the same problem. People pay for products or solutions to problems.
4) key to growth is scalability. Something you can start with 1 and turn into 10, 100, 1000
5) the problem with many educated people is they think certain businesses are beneath them. Remmember Feminotedola started by distributing diesel himself in a pickup!

Keep your eyes open, ask questions as you do about your day to day. Where do you get this products from, is this business profitable, what are the challenges you gave etc.

I once met one of these delivery couriers at a supermarket and I asked him about the business. He was clearly educated. I was surprised he had no idea about his business. He actually had no idea how much his employer charged the customer he was shopping for. His own was just to collect and deliver…..a graduate! A smart person would want to know everything about the business, how much the margins are, the challenges, how the business is run etc so if he has the opportunity or a chance meeting with someone with capital he can put his knowledge to use. These are the people that think japa is the solution to their lives. Yet they live surrounded by opportunity but they are not curious.

These are the people that japa and find out actually life was better in Nigeria.

Cement is NOT a fast moving consumer good by any classification.
FMGs include products of companies like UACN, PZ, NESTLE etc.

The key is to be smart

If you are buying by the truck load, you should eventually be able to sell a truck load a month.

I got this idea from Sanusi Dantata some time ago. Check his Twitter page and browse his feed.

The reason why I mentioned it is because if I remember correctly he said a truck load was about 20m. Someone asked him the same question the OP asked.

Having said that. Business is not for people who lack initiative, who see problems instead of opportunities, who are looking for people to tell them how to make money.

If you are selling wholesale you have your retailers and you are supplying to them in bulk. I don’t know about the cement business but you are not selling by the bag. Your profits are lower but you have faster turnover.

I never asked or encouraged the fellow to relocate abroad. I only pointed it out that business is not as easy as we think.

Like I said my post is not for people who want to be pedantic. But people who are serious. If all you want to do is argue over the classification of FCMG, I suggest you take your N20m and go and clean bottoms in England because people like you will not make it anywhere. The point for serious people is wholesale products you can turnover quickly.

To the OP and those who are serious, here is the tweet below. Also are adverts for cement by the truckload. It’s not the business you are in but how you apply your education to your business. If you can supply 2-3 a week or 10 trucks a month at the minimum margin of 100N, you are making 1m a month. You model your business such that It goes straight from the factory to your customer. No shop, you don’t own the trucks, no nothing Just a distributors license, adverts, marketing, Networking, and a phone. As you can see these are orders for bulk sales. You are not selling by by the bag. As you expand you and develop a name you can either expand or diversify into other high margin businesses. It’s not a high margin business by any measure but the point is there businesses you can do to turnover your money.

It was actually 10m he said for a trailer not 20m

If she make that 20m legitimately here in Nigeria, why not continue with what gave you that money and become a big boss here in Naija than going abroad to serve.
See I keep saying it, if I have as half of the money this op is quoting. I will continue investing in Nigeria and multiplying it. My only business abroad will be for holidaying and visiting choice places I like.

2ndly she need to findout the possibilities of getting a job with what she has or if she need to a recertification cos integration isn't straightforward in any of these countries. Also if she doesn't get a job untime foes she have a survival plan? A support system over there and back here?

All these scenarios are as necessary as the immigration route u take.

Everybody get different destiny in life, because it didn't work out for person A doesn't mean it won't work for another.

Me personally will travel abroad for medicine studies if I have up to 40 million as that money na beans to doctors.

I used to dissuade people who want to jakpa, telling them the truth that there is money in Your Country so where are you running to undecided

Some of the poorest people in anigeria are educated people. Why? Because it seems our education has programmed our resourcefulness and initiative out of us. I was having a discussion on Nairaland a few weeks ago and I told someone my gardener makes over 400k a month. He said I was lying. I said instead of working for one person, he does part time at multiple houses in the same estate. When I calculated his minimum (1 day a week for which he often only does a few hrs) and the number of houses he works for. He makes over 400k.

A graduate will work for 100-200k, a professor will work for 500k, yet electricians, mechanics, plumbers can make 20-100k a day (400k to 1m+ a month) and they are never short of work.

Tell an educated Nigerian he can go into business and compound his capital. He wants you to tell him how and guide him in how to make the money.

There really is something wrong with the products of our education system when a PhD holder (an expert in a particular field) with N20m (capital) and a diploma in business ( basic knowledge of business) cannot think of a business to do in Nigeria or how to commercialize her expertise in Nigeria.

Trust me, if I had that #20m, japa would be the very last thing on my mind. You see this country, with your qualifications, skills, experience and a bit of common business sense, with #20m you will fly. Just invest as a Nigerian, stay financially disciplined and get fully involved in whatever you choose to do, invest wisely.

You see that UK or Canada you wanted to go, when it is time, you will go and come back whenever you like, and it will most likely be for either expansion or pleasure with peace of mind. Not to go and hustle or start afresh in the name of living abroad.

Let that your friend have a rethink or seek counsel for validation or diverse opinion before she takes action. I wish her the best.
