Video: Old news clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix-OowQFIjw?si=mpFYLRZ6IU8LyaG1 A video showing hippos casually roaming the streets of St Lucia has gone viral, leaving thousands of people amazed, amused and a little bit awed. The video was shared by “Yvonne in the Bush“, a personal blog on Facebook. The video: https://web.facebook.com/watch/?v=1483628776014451 “In 2012 I exchanged the Dutch city for the bush in South Africa. I live with my husband and son between the elephants, lions and other wild animals.” She captioned her latest video, explaining what she had seen. “Only in Africa can you find hippos, warthogs and monkeys in the middle of town! … St Lucia; the town where people and wild animals live together.” St Lucia, tucked along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline, is unlike anywhere else. It’s the only town in South Africa that sits entirely within a World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Nature is woven into the fabric of everyday life here. And even though locals are used to spotting hippos on the estuary, grazing on golf courses, or wandering through neighbourhoods at night, Yvonne says her latest sighting was the most extraordinary yet. “During our first night in the town we saw three hippos in the main street. I have seen hippos in town before, but never anything like this. It was by far the best hippo sighting in town I ever had.” Her footage has everyone talking, not only because of the sight itself, but because of how close some people were willing to get. While hippos might look relaxed as they munch on lawns, they are still one of Africa’s most dangerous animals. Yvonne pointed this out in her post. “As you can see in my movie people don’t keep the appropriate distance to these wild animals. People seem to forget that hippos are responsible for over 500 deaths each year.” St Lucia is surrounded by water and the hippos come out mostly at night to graze. Locals even have a nickname for them, the “townies”, hippos that wander in for an easy meal of lush lawn grass. And it’s not just hippos. Yvonne says during her three-day visit, she also spotted warthogs running through the main road, monkeys tugging at shopping bags, honey badgers darting past and even small antelope. For her, that’s the real magic of the town. “I love the atmosphere, the restaurants, the shops, the activities… but most of all I love the wildlife in town.”

If there's one thing I regret about being a Nigerian, it is how we have no restrain in preserving wildlife. Nigerians are just too disorderly, to impetuous, too concerned only about the now, and too shortsighted in preserving life and cultures. There are some tribes in Nigeria that are intent on swallowing other tribes to make theirs bigger. There are some religions that just want to expand and eliminate other religions. Is the beauty of life not in diversity? When there are unique tongues, unique cultures, unique belief systems, is this not what makes the world more colourful and beautiful? |

dfrost:It’s like you don’t know that we have heard the other side of the story. The Bible contains Eve’s side of the story, but when we heard from the Snake, the Snake said it was Eve that gave it the Apple to eat and not the other way round as Eve narrated. So Eve gave the Snake the forbidden fruit to eat and both the humans and Snake were ejected from the Garden |

They should just remove africa from the country name and leave only south cos it doesn't look like one. If your eyes were covered from Nigeria and you were thrown inside the plane and 6 hrs later you landed in their airport and driven to one of their cities and someone said, to you welcome to Germany or France, you'd never doubt it. The country is un-african. I blamed the colonialists for granting us independence in 1960. They should have stayed here for at least, 30 years more in the wake of crude discovery and we'd have had a better country. Today, nearly every state would have been linked with train with better roads. There's a town called Odo Owa in Ekiti. There's a street there where the colonialists asphalt is still standing. No passable road from itawure to aramoko ekiti, the only major road linking osun to ekit state. Aregbesola did the osun stretch down to the akure-ilesha highway. The situation is the same in most states in the country. By now, doctors and professionals wouldn't be japaing. We dont know the consequences of this until in the near future because the trend will never stop. No wife of a colonial master will enter lagos with almost 80 convoy like oluremi did, with their security harassing us on a broad day light just because they're passing. They'd not also spend 2bn usd on refineries that will never work. Snake won't swallow money under them rather, it would have been utilised. You get paid very well, on your job and that's all. I asked my south african friend why he always spends his annual vacation in south africa and not in the west. He said, can you tell me where I can go in the west, that we dont have its replica in SA? He said he can't afford to waste his money outside his country. Doctors from Nigeria are everywhere in south africa doing well. After the apartheid ended, dem com get good leaders to carry on. See Zuma being held and jailed over corrupt practices . That's a responsible nation. Here, they'd be celebrated for slapping them in the face. |

Softmirror:I am kind of agreeing with u. I heard some places in anambra and Imo, u dare not kill a python. They have felt safe over the years and have adapted to even begin entering peoples houses. Yet they do not bite or harm children. But then they may steal ur fowl o. ![]() |
