Security operatives in Kaduna on Thursday sealed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) state secretariat at No. 4 Ali Akilu Road, sparking outrage among opposition figures, News360 Nigeria reports.

The clampdown came hours before the ADC’s North-West leadership was scheduled to visit the Kaduna chapter to sympathise with members recently attacked by suspected thugs.

Witnesses reported heavy police presence around the building, effectively blocking access to the office.

A senior ADC member, who spoke anonymously, said the visit was meant to console members injured during last week’s attack at a coalition meeting with the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

The gathering, held at the NUT Endwell Conference Hall in Magadishu Layout, was violently disrupted by hoodlums who destroyed vehicles, smashed windows, and left several participants injured despite police deployment.

The attack has been linked by opposition figures to rising political hostilities between former governor Nasir El-Rufai and his successor, Governor Uba Sani.

Meanwhile, ADC chieftain Yusuf Shehu Bello has filed a suit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, challenging alleged restrictions on political meetings.

Through his lawyer, Farouk Dikko, Bello sought an injunction to stop police from interfering with lawful gatherings, arguing that the directive requiring clearance for meetings was unconstitutional.

“We are in court to protect our democratic rights."

"The police have no powers to halt political activities. Their duty is to ensure security and maintain peace, not to suppress free association,” Bello said.

Political analysts warn the crackdown could signal a tense political climate in Kaduna as rival factions within the ruling elite jostle for influence ahead of 2027.

Opposition leaders have condemned the action, saying it undermines democracy and threatens further unrest.
