Yes it helps reduces money laundry. unexplained wealth can be easily confisticated . i would even go further and require that beneficial owners of all assets in the country and peoples tax record are available to anyone in the public without any fees or need for freeedom of info request.

Nobody anywhere in the world likes to pay tax, even government officials in developed countries also dodge taxes until they are caught, so waiting for everybody to trust the government on accountability and service delivery means they will wait forever and keep on giving excuses for non-development or provision of basic amenities. Voluntary compliance does not exist anywhere!

While the government’s intention to strengthen tax compliance is understandable, making a Tax Identification Number (Tax ID) compulsory for basic financial services such as banking, insurance, and stock investments could end up punishing ordinary Nigerians more than it benefits the economy.

Millions of Nigerians are still outside the tax net, and many operate in the informal sector where income is unstable and poorly documented. Forcing them to obtain a Tax ID before they can open a bank account or access financial services could push people further away from the formal economy, defeating the very goal of broadening the tax base.

Instead of compulsion, government should first build trust and simplicity in the tax system. Nigerians already feel burdened by multiple taxes and levies, often without seeing the benefits in infrastructure, healthcare, or security. Until accountability and service delivery improve, making Tax IDs mandatory for financial inclusion may look less like reform and more like another barrier.

True progress will come from policies that encourage voluntary compliance, supported by technology, awareness, and incentives — not by shutting the door of the banking hall against those who are already struggling to survive.

Asking people to register for tax ID while transactions with bank servics; i hope all these things wouldn't lead to double taxation and theft at the long-run as we are already hearing complaints of losing money as a result of BVN attached to bank account, people NIN information been sold or exposed
