ADC to Remi Tinubu: National Library completion is FG’s duty, not birthday project

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asked the federal government to take immediate responsibility for completing the National Library of Nigeria project in Abuja.

The party said a national monument of such importance should not depend on charity.

The ADC was reacting to a recent announcement by Oluremi Tinubu, the first lady, who declared her intention to support the completion of the library as part of her birthday celebrations.

In a statement on Wednesday, Bolaji Abdullahi, ADC national publicity secretary, commended Remi’s gesture but said the project must be funded through budgetary provisions.

“The National Library is a living repository of our collective memory and intellectual heritage. It is the custodian of Nigeria’s story, culture, research, and knowledge production. It is not just another building,” the party said.

“It was established by an Act of Parliament in 1964, as a parastatal of the federal ministry of education to ensure that future generations have access to the wealth of knowledge needed to build a progressive and enlightened society. Therefore, for sustainability purposes, the library and its projects must be funded through national budgetary provisions.”

The ADC asked Remi to use her influence to persuade the president to prioritise the project through allocations.

The party said the responsibility for the project’s funding was shifted to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), which explains why there were no direct allocations for the library in the 2024 and 2025 budgets.

“The National Library of Nigeria is far too important to be treated as an afterthought or left to depend on the goodwill of well-meaning individuals,” the statement added.

“A nation’s intellectual heritage cannot rest on acts of benevolence, while being deliberately neglected in the appropriation process.”

A truly democratic Government should have 'standing STRUCTURES' to implement Government policy, not One man and his Wife trying to be the structure, so they can take the Credit (and probably arrogate ownership), for themselves.

I have worked closely with the wealthy and I have seen them get gifts they do not need on their birthdays. What Her Excellency is doing is simply " Don't give me any gift personally, gift the money equivalent to the National library "

It is SUBTERFUGE.

National Library is an 'enduring Asset' of the Nation.
It should not be named after anybody.
Her friends should donate their Gifts to her or to a Charity of her choice, they should use it to buy Rice and distribute/feed Almanjeri or Homeless People, they can use the Collection to repair bad roads or buy Medical Equipments to retrofit Hospitals or University Laboratories... and not name it after her.

Nigerians are not all stooopid or blinded by Party politics, we know the game they are playing.

From the response of ADC party, they affirmed that the National Library was moved to TetFund for funding.

Why is the ADC not directing an inquiry to the TetFund on the situation with the National Library and the need to complete te project and run the national library through the TetFund especially when Education Tax which is paid by all companies in Nigeria is operated, managed and disbursed by TetFund.

If Remi Tinubu or anyone chooses to donate to the project of National Library, that should not be an issue to flog.
