So much misinformation. So little communication from the government to counter constant falsehood and misinformation.

All the so called new media advisers to the government should be sacked!

I find nothing wrong with it but the timing.

This will cost Tinubu votes, lots of votes if the opposition pounce on it.

The money would yield tge government about 600bn a year

Tax is the only way Tinubu knows how to generate money. That man has nothing in his head.
How else will he raise revenue, or sufficient revenues?

This is after they have taxed your income, taxed your bank transactions, even charged toil fees.

Everything is wrong with it. Do you know how many taxes this government is imposing on the citizens? Even bank transaction fees alone is killing.

Tinubu lacks ideas on how to move the country forward.

He only knows how to borrow and increase tax.
Borrowed money will later be redirected to an illegal path.

Highlight from the presidnt new year message.

Governmnt has put in place workable measures to reduce cost of food and living.

The era of pain is behind us.

Downward trend of inflation is expected within the first quarter of the year.

Two days later...

Breaking news!

Government has implemented N45 charges on every N10,000 value of fuel purchased, effective immediately. 🤣

Tinubu is on overdrive to forcibly dip his hands into every Nigerians pockets agbero-style. That is the only way he knows how to generate funds, no other ideas.

A government that provides absolutely nothing to Nigerians who pump their own water and provide their own power with generators and Solar installation, has no business putting a gun to the head of Nigerians to ask them for taxes.

Under Ghadaffi, oil-producing countries like Libya paid their citizens monthly allowances, paid 50% for their cars, provided free water and power supply.

But Nigeria's Oil money remains monopolized by Tinubu (who is the Oil minister) and co., yet they still ask for more money to loot from Nigerian pockets. They are taxing your blood and the air you breath. They want to asphyxiate Nigerians out of existence. Are Nigerians slaves?

If Nigerians will not be allowed to live peacefully, even after allowing them (politicians) to monopolize oil wealth. Then we must radically find alternative ways of keeping our hard earned money away from Mr Tax master or even, push this government out of power, so we can breath.

Nigerians, when is it going to be for a revolution? Politicians need to fear the people, not the other way round.

May this scourge never go beyond 2025..

Income is never the problem. It is always expenditure. Just as a common man will waste money he had not earned, so any government will waste the resoures it can command and extort without resistance.

Watch out. There will be more billion naira scandals, white elephant projects and giveaways to contractor friends and family.

You can already see the stories around the first lady's financial adventures clearly indicating a government that has lost its way in a sea of naira.

There is no need lying to people

The FERMA Act includes a provision for a 5% surcharge on the price of petrol and diesel, not a new tax, which has existed since 2007 but was never enforced . This surcharge was intended to fund the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) for maintaining existing roads, and while it was not enforced it s a provision going back to 2007
The Federal Government has always had that power and can use it at any time

There is no reason to believe it will be exercised in 2026

Fact check me

FERMA ACT 2007

It is not a new law
Where's the evidence for this

What does the govt need more money for when they've already made their revenue in August four months ahead of schedule
At this rate we're running a surplus budget this year. What do they need extra revenue for
Re: Nigerians To Pay Extra ₦45 Per Litre Of Petrol From 2026 Under New Tax Law by JimRohn: 2:11pm On Sep 06, 2025
If this is true, then it is deeply unfair to Nigerians. Citizens are already battling with record-high inflation, unemployment, and the ripple effects of previous subsidy removals. Adding a 5% surcharge on fuel may look like a revenue strategy on paper, but in reality, it directly translates into higher transport fares, soaring food costs, and worsening hardship for ordinary people.

Yes, governments need to diversify revenue and promote clean energy, but this approach punishes citizens instead of providing viable, affordable alternatives. Until Nigeria develops functional, accessible, and affordable renewable energy infrastructure, burdening the masses with additional levies is nothing short of insensitive and exploitative governance.

Reforms should ease the suffering of the people, not compound it.

Even if they met their target for this year, they were still to make a huge budget deficit.

When Buhari assumed office in 2015, 26% of government revenue was devoted to debt servicing. By the time he left office, 97% of it was going towards servicing debt. Buhari had run the economy aground over 8 years and bankrupted it.

With the vast improvement in government revenue, less than 50% is not spent on debt servicing, and at this rate, it should hit 20% in about 3 years time.

The country needs as much revenue as it can get. It is essential for an economy, especially one like Nigeria's rising out of a tattered economy, to be in a strong fiscal position. For decades, over 70% of government revenue was from crude oil. Any time, crude oil prices went down, government finances were in ruins. With a massive improvement in non-oil revenues, the country's over reliance on oil for government financing is gradually coming to an end. It would even be great if revenues can double by 2027.

The tax on petroleum product will only take effect in 2026 when the next tax act comes into effect.

The new tax bill coming into effect actually reduces the number of taxes.

What has gone up is the revenue collection.

This is partially due to a weakened Naira, but also to much improved collection rates.

The government needs revenue, lots of it. Even with increased revenues, there is still a massive budget deficit. The country isn't out of the woods.

I find it odd that you're still blaming Buhari
I doubt there's any govt that has met its revenue target this early in the world. To say we need all the revenue we can get is not wrong. But more importantly is how the money is spent to rejuvenate the ailing economy. That's the big elephant. The average Nigerian does not understand whether revenue target is being met or not. What matter is how much disposable income he has at the end of the day. The present trajectory seems to be one of rich country, poor citizens. Reminds me of Joseph's Egypt
