It will be great to see the potential combo of Victor Osimhen and Cyriel Dessers for the first ever in the national team as I do not think these two ever met eye-to-eye in camp (correct me if I'm wrong).

By the way, given Chelle's last 5 games for Nigeria, he's shown preference for playing a lone striker in 4 of those—vs. Rwanda (4-2-3-1), vs. Ghana (4-3-3), vs. Jamaica (4-3-3), vs. Russia (4-2-3-1). The only time he deployed 2 'strikers' upfront was vs. Zimbabwe (4-1-3-2) with an Osimhen-Simon partnership.

Chelle might consider sticking to this 4-1-3-2 yet again, but this time, with an Osimhen-Dessers combo.

These duo will compliment each other pretty well as they are two different kinda strikers with varying but complimentary abilities.

Osimhen - Explosive, Clinical, Aerial prowess.

Dessers - Technically gifted, ability to hold-up play and draw fouls in dangerous areas, handful off the ball due to intelligent positioning.

Can Nigeria still qualify for World Cup 2026?



Yes, Nigeria can still reach the finals to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico. But there is plenty of work to do, and they will need some help from elsewhere.

The Super Eagles lie fourth in the six-team Group C on seven points, six points behind leaders South Africa and one behind Rwanda and Benin.

Nigeria have four games remaining, starting with a home game against Rwanda in September. Win that, and they will have the chance to be at least within three points of South Africa should they defeat Bafana Bafana on matchday eight.

However, should they fail to beat Rwanda and South Africa defeat Lesotho, Eric Chelle's team will be unable to finish top of the group if they do not win against the leaders. In that scenario, they would need to focus on finishing in second place in the standings and hope that is enough to earn passage to the inter-continental playoff round.

The winners of CAF's nine groups qualify automatically for the World Cup, with the four best runners-up entering the playoff route.

South Africa defeated Lesotho 3-0 to move to 16 points and keep Nigeria and Rwanda at arm’s length with less than three matches remaining for them.

Goals from Maloisane Nkota, Lyle Foster and Oswin Appollis gave South Africa the victory.

Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has named his final 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.


Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made the list despite sustaining an injury in Chippa United’s league clash on Monday.

Captain William Troost-Ekong, reliable forward Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Alex Iwobi are some of the regulars included in the squad by Chelle.

Wilfred Ndidi, Ola Aina, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, and Calvin Bassey were also included.

South Africa is a solid 9 points ahead of Nigeria with only 3 games left to go, meaning that for Nigeria to catch up with South Africa, South Africa needs to convincingly lose their remaining 3 games while Nigeria needs to win their remaining 4 games convincingly. South Africa needs only a draw to progress and your guess is as good as mine.

Saw some of the African qualifier games, and must say African football teams have massively improved.

Next year world cup, they won't be pushed around that easily.

That is a country whose football was in the doldrums when we won our first Nations Cup in 1980, when our club sides like Rangers, Shooting, Insurance and later Leventis, Abiola Babes, Nationale and BCC lions were continental names, when we won our first global championship in 1985...

But look at what our football has been reduced to due to the Nigerian factors of mediocrity, sentiment and crass corruption.

I think we need a hiatus, a football fast, a wilderness period for the purpose of soul searching and renewal because clearly this decline is terminal.

The Nations Championship won by Morocco yesterday is evident and damning. The most disgusting performance by any football team out of this country I have even witnessed. And believe me I have seen a lot of Nigerian national teams.

Immediately they turned NFA into another playground for idle and unemployed northern politicians i knew it was just a matter of time b4 Nigeria happened to our football! Even the people there have learnt the naija way of doing things.................people who truly love football should run our FA simple! No passion whatsoever.......even the players lack zeal and passion!

Like anything socio political, by advocacy, by people power. The people first recognize there is a problem then find solutions, then advocate for it. Soft advocacy first and if there is no response or reform then increase the noise.

Start with what supporters of badly run club sides do in Europe. Raise banners calling for reforms at match venues like the upcoming game in Uyo. Protest visually in front of the world press.

That should send a clear message and start a movement to get administration out of the hands of the cabal that runs the show today and their State FA henchmen that regurgitate these clueless and inept NFF officials.

We should reexamine the electoral process to broaden it and make elections more transparent for starters. The running of our sports and football in particular is too serious a task to leave in the hands of these fellows
