| Why Is Northern Food Mostly Disliked??? by Obavoh(op): 4:21pm On Sep 06, 2025 |
Growing up in the North I didn’t really take note but I just realized that Yoruba restaurant —> Yoruba+Igbo+Hausa Customers Igbo restaurant —> Igbo+Yoruba+Calabar Customers Calabar restaurant—> Yoruba+Igbo+Hausa+Calabar Hausa restaurant—> Northerners Just last month there was a small riot in the company I work for. The Hausa woman that cooks in our Canteen serves only Northern food and soups. We have 70% Northern workers and 30% Southerners. The South boys usually prefer to leave the company and go to a restaurant far in the village just to eat lunch everyday. I have never seen them eat our food. The company had to bring in a Calabar woman to cook for them after much protest. This woman’s food is more expensive but they don’t complain.

I have entered the Calabar’s woman canteen to eat a few times. The food is good but I love the Hausa food also. Eba & Soup= ₦1,200. ( I have forgotten the name of the soup, please remind me )Stew Rice with meat & fish= ₦1800 Pounded yam & Egwusi = ₦2000 I noticed that to eat southern Food you need to add a lot of Protein like Meat fish or Chicken to enjoy it but it is not the same in the North

![]() Nigha, you just spoke my mind.... During my 4 months stay in Niger state back then in 2016,I didn't for once eat any northern meal....In fact, northerners made me to dislike Okpa, not until I tasted it when I returned back to Delta state..... I remembered how a neighbor of ours served us fried rice and meat during their Salah,I couldn't eat the rice due to excess curry and thyme Even after eating the meat,I was engaged in a steady fight with toilet ![]() |

Their hygiene has a bad reputation and that will always affect how their meals are accepted by outsiders. I will be less willing to try out their meal compared to Calabar people's because of difference in reputation. They dig water well close to soakway so imagine what water is being used for processing. Especially those household prepared small-chops. Imagine the water inside. They also wash fruit with gutter water. A known fact. |

Hausa food is highly medicinal. We do not pack meat or fish to enjoy our soup. The highest you can add is dried fish and that is optional. We prefer to eat meat separately eg Suya, kilishi , Dambu Nama etc Masa&Miyan Taushe (pumpkin soup)= ₦500 Tuwo with Miyan Kuka and dried fish= ₦800

In my culture, they say eyes will eat first before the mouth. Northern meals are not always enticing. The only thing edible every Nigerian love to eat from Northerners are Suya, Killishi and Kulikuli. And like others pointed out, hygiene is another factor |

Obavoh:This statement is true... I remember some of the neighbors I lived with back then in my stay in the north. We kinda became close so we often shared meals between ourselves. I noticed that they cooked food without meat sometimes which they shared with me. I innocently and casually remarked one day that we in the south don't usually cook food without meat. It was a harmless remark as I didn't mean it to be offensive. But later I noticed they felt offended. They later brought fried meat and remarked that usually they don't eat meat with food as they preferred to eat meat separately. That they usually eat a lot of meat and don't place much value on eating it with food. That's when I understood my remark didn't go well with them. As for why some people don't prefer their food from my own personal experience I think it may be because sometimes it tastes bland, sometimes sweetened like too much Maggi and then sometimes doesn't look too appealing to the eyes. I may be wrong though as I'm not here to judge. I also went to some nice restaurants there in the north where I had some great and unforgettable meals! |

I guess it is because of too much Maggie in hausa foods. The seasoning is just too much. Some even even unwrap one or more cubes of Maggie on already cooked food. Haba! I can't deal because my stomach won't forgive me 🌚 |

Hausa are good with Meat sweets and candy and bedroom enhancement products. I can confidently buy suya, coconut candy, kulikuli, burantashi for za other room but una food na no go area. I once saw a Hausa girl that sells cooked spaghetti. She poured the boiled spaghetti inside a big plastic bowl and poured in raw palm oil to begin mixing. She proceeded to mix in raw Ajinomoto, maggi and onions. And see bike men Dey rush buy the food like say tomorrow no Dey |

Northerners food and Indian food are 5&6... But their indomie sellers and mai suya is bit different sha... All tribes queues for indomie and egg at the Hausa guy's shop in my area, the guy is neat... |

The problem with their food is poor hygiene, excess use of seasonings, and spices. The day I saw how they sun-dry kilishi, I have not tasted it since then without reheating it in the oven or in a microwave. Their food would become more acceptable with a little balance in giving attention to cutting down on the process excesses. |

It's the looks. They mostly don't look like they should be eaten. Those pictures you posted, how e be for your face? There's no tribe that doesn't eat suya, dabino, sugarcane or mai shai. Na facial appeal. |

For me, it is a flavour thing. Northerners eat tofu (I don't know the Hausa name for it, but soybean cake), which is a staple of Asian foods (which I love). Tofu has zero taste even though it's healthy. I like tofu in Asian dishes though. And I tried Masa this year and it also tasted bland to me. I saw the guy I go to for POS eating what looked like a swallow with vegetables and beans in a soup made with little palm oil, but I can't remember the name he called it. And I had a nanny from the North, who was cooking Indomie and poured the entire seasoning packet inside it, then added extra salt! I do like groundnut soup though, I'm not sure it is a proper Northern soup. My tastes are very different: I think almost all Nigerian food is boring, save for jollof rice and moin moin or the vegetables are overcooked mostly in soups. I would willingly eat East Asian cuisine (Korean, Japanese, Thai, Chinese) all year. I used to like Indian food a long time ago, when I liked indian films and one Indian boy irl like that ![]() |

Even the imagination of me eating Hausa food makes me uneasy. If there is a competition between the indians and Naija on whose meals look appalling, the Hausas would rep wella. Recently, I have stopped eating their suya, as I ask myself how long and where do they store after each day. There is another of their meat that steams in a basin with this terrible smell. The meat is mostly kpomo. Omoh! For me to eat any of those meals, maybe na war fit cause am. |

First of all, healthy eating requires eating carbs with protein. We enjoy our soups without meat as well. However, depth and flavour in food often come from certain key elements like: 1. Protein and its fat – especially in foods like butter, cream, sour cream, and buttermilk These are particularly important in baked goods as well. Sour cream and buttermilk can make the difference between ordinary cake (like many Nigerian cakes) and a great cake. 2. Fermented foods – such as sour cream, buttermilk, or fermented locust beans (iru, ogiri). 3. Smoked foods - proteins included 4. Dried proteins – like stockfish, crayfish 5. Herbs and spices – including flavourful scotch bonnet peppers; Cameroon peppers; ginger Southern Nigerian cooking draws heavily on this mix: fresh protein, dried and smoked protein, fermented locust beans, herbs, and spices. Leave these out and the soup may still be edible, but it will lack depth and a proper flavour profile. In Northern cooking, flavour a little on spices but still not enough for the threshold, which is why Indian foods use a lot of spices, ghee, yoghurt to achieve a depth. Without that, the dishes can feel too plain or ordinary. Try and make an okro soup with a rich goat, beef, turkey, or chicken stock (arranged them on the strength of their depth), then make one without. The difference in depth and taste is immediate. Let's just say northerners and Indians have something in common. 😬 Don't get me started on their serving certain dishes with seasoning cubes. Obavoh:Then, there certainly won't be depth of flavour. |

That's interesting. I'm just learning this. Interestingly the Hausa also avoid Igbo food. You as Hausa, can you explain why? I've not had opportunity to eat Hausa food. I would have loved to try it. I've eaten in Igbo restaurants and it was OK for me. I've eaten ewedu in Lagos and I liked it but when in Ogun and Ondo states I was in trouble with pepper in rice, melon soup or even vegetable soup. I survived with flagyl. |

I'm Yoruba I don't have issue with their Food. I like Tuwo , I can't remember the name of that popular soup. But the problem is how you are being served when they notice you are not from their tribe. They serve you with hostility. I don't usually know how they differentiate people from their tribes from outsiders by merely looking at you. Food should be served with Love. |

Obavoh:I just remembered Dambu Nama, that meat is so savory!!! That's an entirely taste different from kilishi and sugar. |
| Re: Why Is Northern Food Mostly Disliked??? by folake4u: 3:21am On Sep 07, 2025 |
I like Dambu Nama, Suya, Kilishi, Kosai (sprinkled with enough yaji). I'm not a fan of Masa, tuwo, or fura. Recently, I bought yaji all the way from Kaduna for my noodles. There's this flavour it gives. |
