He Has Pain In His Ankle - Eric Chelle Provides Victor Osimhen Injury Update by HealthDiary(op): 8:12am On Sep 07, 2025
Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen is facing a race against time to be fit for the Super Eagles’ crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

The forward was forced off in the first half of Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo after sustaining an ankle injury.

Osimhen rejoined the national team setup this month after missing the Unity Cup triumph in May and the 1-1 draw with Russia that followed.

Expectedly, he led the line against Rwanda, but his outing lasted less than 45 minutes. The 26-year-old, who netted twice against the same opposition in March, could not replicate that form as injury ended his game prematurely.

What Chelle said

Head coach Eric Chelle confirmed that the situation remains uncertain, with the medical team expected to assess the striker in the coming days.

“I can’t say much about Victor for now. He has pain in his ankle, and we will see how he feels tomorrow (today). I also need to consult the doctors before we know if he can make the trip,” Chelle told reporters after the match.

Must-Win tie in Bloemfontein

Nigeria’s slim qualification hopes hang in the balance in their upcoming showdown with Group C leaders South Africa in Bloemfontein.

Despite edging Rwanda 1-0 through a spectacular overhead kick from substitute Tolu Arokodare, the Super Eagles remain six points behind Bafana Bafana with only three games left to play.

Anything short of victory could end their chances of automatic qualification.

We have other players who can replace him. Arokodare has been on fire whenever he's introduced.

Desser was a bit lazy with his marking yesterday though

The guy that paired with Bassey yesterday was good. Infact we played back 3 which was solid to some extent

That Rwanda player that injured him, must have been acting on direct order...deliberately injuring our star boy.

I hope he is fit against South Africa.. because the Super Eagles cannot afford to draw, not to talk of losing...it's a MUST WIN match, for Nigeria to have a little faint hope of going to the World Cup

We have decent options on the bench.

Arokodare impressed, so he can start.

Dessers was a disappointment. Even the Coach had to later substitute him out after initially bringing him in for injured Osimhen.

I'm not sure Nigeria can win South Africa. Someone should borrow me more character because I have nothing to say again.

I blame the earlier appointment of Finidi George for all these woes we're passing thru. If it was Amuneke, who knows the story would have been different today.

We saw this and advised, but hell no, it must be Finidi because he was complacent to the NFF officials.

Not playing is a blessing in disguise. The attack will be unpredictable

The defense will be put on serious test on Tuesday

Arokodare impressed yesterday. He made good use of his height. It was a big trouble for his markers. We need more wing play in SA. Aina should cut down on his flamboyance. He needs to release the ball to Lookman more quickly. Nwaubani, should be more careful with his antics. Dessers, really don't how to place the guy, even when he was at Rangers.
Dele Bashiru could be very useful in SA. I like the guy's work rate.
All in all, I wish them luck in the remaining matches. I'm not too hopeful, though.

One would wonder if it's a machine that typed this. No room for quick recovery?

I wished they played like Brazil of old ( Ronaldinho set) though to have a fair chance at world cup. Group stage exit wouldn't be nice.

The pairing of Calvin Bassey and Frederick was superb. I know Frederick was going to be a superstar, seeing what he displayed during his
U-17 days. Such a great guy.

They should leave Ndidi out and introduce Uche Chrisantus of Getafe a Deep lying midfielder. Tolu Arokodare can start as he is good at build up plays

However, Moses Simon was our most dangerous forward against Rwanda. I'd excuse Lookman because he was played out of position.

Where did you see a back 3? It was a 4 3 3 formation with Bassey and Frederick at the back, Ndidi, Onyeka and Iwobi in the middle.

We played 3 back. Bassey at the central defence. Aina at the left back while Frederick at the right back. Ndidi played more as a defensive midfielder while Onyenka and Iwobi was in front of Ndidi

Super Eagles should have lost yesterday's match and safe Nigerians the prolonged mental torture of qualifying or not + TPain. SA is already far from us only a miracle for Nigeria and disaster to SA will make us qualify

Simon - Osimhen - Lookman

Iwobi - Ndidi - Onyeka

Onyemaechi (LB) - Bassey (CB) Fredericks (CB) - Aina (RB)
Re: He Has Pain In His Ankle - Eric Chelle Provides Victor Osimhen Injury Update by IMPARTIAL: 2:51pm On Sep 07, 2025
First, Eric Chelle has a flaw. He does not notice when things are going wrong. How can Simon and Lookman play the left wing? One was supposed to be on the right side but kept drifting to the left. This is because both of them are used to the left side. Chelle did not notice this. That was why whenever a midfielder wanted to pass the ball to the right wing, he wouldn't see anyone. Ikpeba complained about this too.

Secondly, Christantus Uche is hard and strong. He needs to come in and replace someone.

Thirdly, Iwobi is good but we need a stronger person in that position.

Fourthly, Lookman or Simon should be dropped for Chukwueze to come in. Simon or Lookman should operate on the left, and Chukwueze on the right. We need to pile pressure on the SA defense.

Fifthly...I never really liked Arokodare when he first joined the team. Now, I realize that he carries a threat. Osimhen may be better, but this guy is equally solid.

Sixthly, Aina should give his all as he does for Forest.
