I stayed in the north considerable time ... No mixed feelings forced myself during Salah to eat the meal.

My summary is the problem with the northern is the northerner himself not the food.

I and I'm sure many people still feel hard taking northern food from a northerner for the personal hygiene reservation ,which I all blame mostly on packaging of the person ,then the food . This has nothing to do with the food tasting or quality .

If the same northern meal is prepared by another person of perceived hygiene or packaging even if a northerner too the reception will be very high.

Experiment:

Try northern first class hygiene kitchen catering business, like eating mall having good classic hygiene service and see if this topic is absolete. One day Igbos might remember northern dishes and show everyone it's not about the food, it the person, image, and packaging. If the Igbos remember northern dish as a business, you will use tickets and stand in line to buy it ..

Re: Responding To 'Why Is Northern Food Mostly Disliked?' by yemre: 4:34pm On Sep 07, 2025
Well, I think most of these things are just cultural...and nothing really special!

As a Yoruba man for instance, I'd rather prefer to eat amala, gbegiri and ewedu than eat akpu, likewise and Igbo man would prefer to eat akpu and ofe nsala than eat tuwo. So, northerners would prefer to eat tuwo shinkafa and wanke than eating amala and gbegiri and ewedu.

So, there's nothing bias about it.

As for hygiene, I think it's general. Even as a Yoruba man, I will not walk into a dirty amala joint in the name of food. It has nothing to do with tribe. This is just personal.

Brother forget, your food is nothing,I travelled to North in 2018,I spent 2 weeks I cannot eat any of your food,When I got back to my base people were asking me did I sick, because I did eat good food for two weeks
Sometimes illiteracy and lack of knowledge of human anatomy and psychology is the problem with people like you.
Fact is compared to others, Hausas in general appear to have poor hygiene. You just have to look at places where northerners dominate here in Lagos and you will readily perceive the low level of hygiene there. However, food taste and reception like music is something our palates have been trained over the years to accept. It’s about background and culture. To the northerners, their food is the best. You too from the south have a tongue that have been trained to appreciate the composition of your own foods.
You can’t use that tongue to judge other peoples food

Same thing when I went to SE. The odor of akpu nearly kpai me. I vom*ted severally. It was really smelly.

But that doesn't mean it's bad food. I'm just not used to it. I have travelled round the world, there's no place you will go and like the local delicacy just like that. It's people who have low brain and villagers and don't have social experience that will assume their food or culture Is the best. Since I started working internationally, I just see why Westerners are by far wiser than Africans. You will never hear any westerner saying "these people have bad food" becuase they have sense. Its always the olodos that thinks their own way is always the best. Ask someone who has never left Akure, he will tell you Akure is the best city I Nigeria because of his experience. That's how you will know the difference between olodos and smart people. First of all, this argument is even dumb, only Africans can have such conversation. We still have a long way to go as a race

The quality of Northern food is evident by the strength and stature of their men and the grace and beauty of their women.

Too much obesity and ill health amongst Southerners.
Northerners feed to stay alive.

I can bet my last card that majority of those who criticize northern foods are doing it mostly out of ignorance or programming.

Majority of them have never been to the north nor have they tested any northern foods to come to such conclusions.

There's no igbo or Yoruba or any person that has been to the north that will criticize their food.

I
Definitely.

I laugh when people criticize Hausa good. I have lived in the north all my life and I have also visited places in the south. I can tell you that, no tribe in Nigeria has more varieties of delicacy like the North. Reasons other parts of Nigeria detest their food I don't know, but this Is my take on this. Northerners are modest and don't flunt things(food, wealth, house etc) the way we southerners do. Southerners talk about their cultures, food and also believe they have the best in everything. Folks believe me, this is not always true. Northern foods are medicinal and full of fiber hence, you hardly see their women heavy the way we have it in the south. You could actually eat different food for a week without repeating a particular food here in the North except if you want to. Southerners may not like northern food it is understandable, but the reasons for the dislike on this forum is not agreeable.

Nothing like toilet broom anywhere abeg. The broom used for soup by the yorubas and some middle beltans, are new brooms from the market. They cut it to small sizes before using it.

Another favorite criticism is that Northern food is “bland” or “not enticing.” But what is the standard for “enticing”? Must a soup be drenched in palm oil or look fiery red before it deserves respect? Miyan kuka, made from baobab leaves, is deeply medicinal and nourishing.

So the real question is this: do you want food that merely excites your eyes for a moment, or food that sustains your body for a lifetime?
you highlighted the complaint which is "not enticing? and you talking of being medicinal. with your response, you confimred that northern food is not enticing but bland looking.

whether you like it or not, food must be enticing and appealing to eyes and tasty. that is just the reality.

Then there is the complaint of “too much Maggi, too much Ajinomoto.” This one is almost laughable. Are seasoning cubes a Northern invention? Every region in Nigeria uses them, sometimes excessively.
I do not see you debunking the claim in your point you raised here.

are you agreeing that northern foods has excessive maggi?

Lol. It happened to me too...

But the problem is the area I visited, the less developed area. But boom once I enter the elite area, everything changed!

North is actually the best in terms of everything! (so sorry to add even crimes) the mechanic village I entered to repair my car gave me the best service compared to the shit kaseem and Michael dem they offer for ibadan and Lagos!

They also have the best infrastructure facilities, roads, education institutions and colorful cultural themes...

Let me add this too.

Fair counterpost. I saw your response before reading the previous thread. Initially, I thought of tribal prejudice as the reason many southerners don't like northern meals. I read the previous thread, saw their responses and read yours - it still boils down to tribal prejudice because an unhygienic environment is a Nigerian thing, not a regional concept. Unfortunately for northerners, though, most southerners tend to interact with northerners in such environments. A thorough analysis would come from southerners who have lived a long time in northern Nigeria.

However, I disagree that the sight of a meal should not be taken into consideration. How a meal looks and how it is served play an important role in how the meal would be cherished. Eyes "eat" before the mouth. Additionally, OP's meals' pictures did not help matters. Presentation matters a lot.

Primarily , for me, it is about the hygiene level of the sellers down here in the south .. most or majority don't bathe and applies some pungent perfumes

A look at their legs and you don't want to go near their wares

Down here even fellow northerners who have becomes "urbanized, don't go to their people joint to eat ...

This is not made up stories because I am in the midst of what you can call a mini Nigeria every single day of the week

Call it bias or anything but the hygiene thing is hard to Push away .. just tour their living areas where they dominate and from whence these foods are prepared and you will almost throw up

I only recently started eating amala and ewedu and one thing , the sellers were guy men ... You can collect food from them and eat it even if they were not food vendors ....

You try jóó for this response! There's no difference between northern and southern foods.

But I still prefer southern foods though.
Re: Responding To 'Why Is Northern Food Mostly Disliked?' by KayaMaghan: 4:55pm On Sep 07, 2025
I think, by now, most people should already realize that Northerners are the ones everyone else loves to hate.

And the truth is that there is no basis or justification for that hate.

When it comes to food though, people, Nigerians even more so, always associate "expensive" with higher quality.
Northern restaurants and eateries are generally cheaper; and that's generally because the Northern people
are not always out to milk anybody of their money.

The people from the south ALWAYS see that both as a sign that the food is of low quality and that the Northern people are not smart,
especially considering the fact that they generally despise people from the north.

It is made worse by the fact that the Northern people are not as loud and showy (or superficial) as their southern counterparts.
For me though, I am from the middle belt, but I will rather eat any Northern food, whatever it is, than most foods from the south.
I only enjoy any southern food when it is prepared at home.
Re: Responding To 'Why Is Northern Food Mostly Disliked?' by IMAliyu2: 4:57pm On Sep 07, 2025
And a majority of the other thread also say they like Suya, Kose, kulikuli, kilishi and so on.

Meaning they enjoy some of the Northern cuisine, which is fine. People don't need to enjoy all of your foods, I don't like a number of our own Northern foods and see it as mostly survival food (like tuwon dawa).

And I also probably don't like all of yoruba or igbo cuisine as well.

I also don't tend to eat food outside my home and a few trusted friend's homes, because I don't know the conditions or hygiene it was made it.

I dislike northern food the day I saw them using insecticide and cement to preserve beans, and have seen so many unhealthy ways of preserving food from them too.
