I dislike northern food the day I saw them using insecticide and cement to preserve beans, and have seen so many unhealthy ways of preserving food from them too.
Insecticide, cementhuh

Where was this?

Don't be rude!
It's not tight to refer to another person's food as disgusting. It's all relative.

Fair counterpost. I saw your response before reading the previous thread. Initially, I thought of tribal prejudice as the reason many southerners don't like northern meals. I read the previous thread, saw their responses and read yours - it still boils down to tribal prejudice because an unhygienic environment is a Nigerian thing, not a regional concept. Unfortunately for northerners, though, most southerners tend to interact with northerners in such environments. A thorough analysis would come from southerners who have lived a long time in northern Nigeria.

However, I disagree that the sight of a meal should not be taken into consideration. How a meal looks and how it is served play an important role in how the meal would be cherished. Eyes "eat" before the mouth. Additionally, OP's meals' pictures did not help matters. Presentation matters a lot.
I like this your comment. They interact with northerners from low level environment yeah.

you highlighted the complaint which is "not enticing? and you talking of being medicinal. with your response, you confimred that northern food is not enticing but bland looking.

whether you like it or not, food must be enticing and appealing to eyes and tasty. that is just the reality.

I do not see you debunking the claim in your point you raised here.

are you agreeing that northern foods has excessive maggi?
Niger, Nassarawa, Kano, Adamawa and Benue are all parts of northern Nigeria. But believe me, they have distinct foods and delicacies.

If he tries that from roadside salesgirl, there's high chance he's spending the night in toilet.

Moi moi is one of my favorite, but it has to be home cooked or from polish eateries. I won't buy from an IDP on the road for sake of patronage
Northerners hygiene is very poor. During the days of SAPA when I was doing my ND.
I use to eat tuwo shinkafa.
The lady in Sabo will use her hand to pick the tuwo ball and put it in your plate.
I just use to close eye and buy because I'm hungry.
Common sense would have allowed her to wrap them first.
Now the problem is.. other northerners not complaining but enjoying it that way lol.
At least the suya and the rest are best.

Kulikuli at some point began to loose patronage.
My auntie some decades ago went to serve in the north and she saw alot of handicap making kulikuli.
She became disgusted and say none of her children will eat kulikuli anymore. But me I kept eating Jare 🤣 because my garri can't go without kulikuli.
When the Northerners start packaging their meal like they did to suya etc we will all eat from it.
They're dirty food sellers everywhere so we pick from the best. If I see a very classy Hausa restaurant I'll go there.

Let's take kunu for example, Hausa people own kunu but Igbo people took and made it thicker and always give option to add condensed milk and groundnut.
Which makes it more richer.
I always decide to buy rich kunu from an Igbo woman compared to an Hausa woman because the kunu has been repackaged

But that doesn't mean it's bad food. I'm just not used to it. I have travelled round the world, there's no place you will go and like the local delicacy just like that. It's people who have low brain and villagers and don't have social experience that will assume their food or culture Is the best. Since I started working internationally, I just see why Westerners are by far wiser than Africans. You will never hear any westerner saying "these people have bad food" becuase they have sense. Its always the olodos that thinks their own way is always the best. Ask someone who has never left Akure, he will tell you Akure is the best city I Nigeria because of his experience. That's how you will know the difference between olodos and smart people. First of all, this argument is even dumb, only Africans can have such conversation. We still have a long way to go as a race

I understand your point.

I think the issue has more to do with expertise and culture.

Maybe Northerners aren't very good with cooking or maybe their meals radiate differently from what majority expect a meal to be.

That is why you see all Nigerians enjoy Suya, Kilishi and always hail Northerners for those two amazing special meat delicacies.

So to me, I think Northerners are good in proteinous meals than other parts of Nigeria.

For instance, most people in the world despise Chinese cuisines and meals compared to European or even Arab meals and cuisines.

But in other things, the world prefers Chinese stuff, but when it comes to food, majority of the world despise Chinese meals and cuisines.

So I think same thing applies to Northern meals and cuisines smiley

Hygiene is important, not just for our surroundings, but also for personal cleanliness and the tools we use. Sometimes vendors take their time to clean the gutters you just talked about but your guys.... Na! They can take a pee or poo there as far as there is a rubber kettle around. Consider the napkin the seller uses to wipe their hands before cutting suya or collecting your money, or the condition of the containers and kettles used by a Mai shayi. These are practices that have become normalized,

These individuals may seem unaffected by these unsanitary conditions, but that doesn't mean the same is true for everyone. These your guys see well water as normal drinkable water, they take it as normal....the video of mangoes kept inside gutters to ripen them comes to mind, and just recently a video of cement used to preserve beans.... Damn!

RollinTNDA:
So why is Northern food singled out? Isn’t it convenient that when it is your own buka, you call it “local delicacy,” but when it is a Northern dish, you dismiss it as “dirty”? Is that really about hygiene, or is it about perception and bias?
I have lived in the North a long time to understand the issue

It's all about Presentation.
In the South, you can find Amala in the lowest roadside buka as well as in big polished Eateries. You can go to the type of eatery that suits your class.

Unfortunately, in the North it is difficult to find posh eateries that serve Tuwo Shinkafa, Tuwo Masara, Tuwo Dawa with Miyan Luka or Mayan Taoshe...etc

What Southerners see are just the low end eateries from the girl who hawks to the low-end bukaterias.

This is the problem.

Secondly, the Northern culture of Alimajiris scavenging in eateries without recourse to decorum makes it a culture-shock to the average Southerner. I cannot tolerate someone kicking a plate I am going to be using to eat.

I stopped taking the Local Yogurt Fura de Nunu in the North because of this even though I used to enjoy it so much. How can I stand 6 boys licking the empty bowl after I finish taking the product?

The third is about packaging!
This is how food is presented during serving: usually on the average not to appetising.
My experience with Danwake will make me vomit.
I guess I may be able to eat Danwake ONLY if it is cooked in a Rich Hausa friend house. But from my experience, it was like something prepared for dogs to eat.

So, sentiments apart, these are the problems of perception as you claimed.
Yes Hausa foods can be made appetising but it also needs a lot of appreciation from Northern cultures and a conscious push to make them global

Thank you so much for the enlightenment.
You can tell that the post criticizing Northern delicacy, like most posts here on NL, is riddled with misinformation, ignorance and implicit bias.
And what’s more disheartening is the fact that the ignorant ones will run with that false narrative, and spread it around like wildfire…so unfortunate!!
But thank God there are people like you to set records straight, matching knowledge with intelligence.

I think in terms of food taste, they are the worst, though lots of their foods are medicinal, but that does not take away the fact that foods in other regions are medicinal as well.

Never heard of an Hausa restaurant anywhere in Southern Nigeria.

Truth be told, I only eat at Igbo, Calabar or Akwa Ibom restaurants. Never been to an Amala joint before.

Op should not forget that Hausa people keep everything to themselves. They don't mingle. So, we know very little about their foods with the excerption of SUYA.

The only think I can comfortably eat from the Northern stable is their suya or Kilishi.

Another is anything I can buy and rewash before eating like Tiger nut, carrots.

I can't eat their real food.

You got at least 80% of the issues raised wrong.

You kept almost hitting the point and then falling just short. Because you responded emotionally.

All or at least Most people for example on the other thread commended suya and said it was one of the few delicacy from the north they could eat.

Many people don't have issues with suya or meat!
Yes I do have issues with suya and meat,
