Hello, are you in Abuja? If yes, please can you share the contact of the guys that did the installation?

Seems like the customer care don't have information about the availability in my area.
I am in Lagos sir

Okay. I am trying to get the contact of the guys that installed the fibre for a company close to me, unfortunately the staff don't even know who to ask. Manager is no where to be found, hopefully I get the person tomorrow.

Just fill out the FibreX form on their website.. if your area is live an agent will contact you.

MTN has had a Fibre broadband service for quite a while now but is now quickly expanding its coverage. I looked into it at the start of the year, and was happy to see them finally begin rollout in my estate months ago.

Here's a rundown of all you need to know about the service.

This post is not sponsored and is just my own personal experience.

1. Installation begins in my area around April 2025. Poles are installed, with the Fibre device mounted on poles.

2. After access point installation, I reach out to MTN customer service about joining the program. Also even go to the nearest MTN office to inquire. They are unhelpful and provide no information on when the service will become active in my locale.

3. I see them installing the poles around the area in May and take the contact of a salesman. We keep in touch and he promises to let me know when service begins.

4. In early June he tells me service has begun. I verify from a friend at the MTN office. I pay for it in late June. 25k. NIMC servers go down nationwide. All forms of registrations are put on hold as a result and I'm unable to have a profile created. Not MTN's fault.

5. NIMC servers are fixed in late July. On July 30th I receive my FN ID. The very next morning, Thursday July 31st, I get a call for installation. Installation is done but installation is done wrongly and the inept technician lacks the tools to troubleshoot.

6. Monday August 4 I receive a call from MTN for activation. But activation cannot be done because installation was done incorrectly. Issue is escalated. On Tuesday morning I'm visited by four MTN engineers who come to troubleshoot. They figure out what the issue is and team lead asks the installer to come and fix it.

7. Wednesday afternoon my installation is fixed. I call for activation and by ~7pm the service is active.

Why do I outline the events? To give an idea of how MTN's customer service is. I was impressed. The only big issues I faced were:

- NIMC servers
- Bad installation initially (MTN does not provide their own installers, and this is actually outsourced)

Now for the important details.

1. MTN's FibreX is a fiber connection. A cable goes from the access point on a pole in your street, into your house. That, of course, means it's susceptible to more infrastructural issues. Poles may fall due to wind or anything, and access points may fail like all electronics eventually do. On the flip side, it's also a more stable service since it's not directly tied to signal reception I believe.

2. Installation is free. I only paid 25k for the 50mbps plan.

3. Availability is currently limited. As at the time of posting this on August 8 2025, MTN's FibreX is only available in 14 states. Abuja, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, and Rivers. They are currently expanding, though. Two months ago it was only available in six states. It's also only available in select areas in these states. Typically the most high-brow areas where they're likely to have the most customers for a service like this.

4. You can confirm availability in your area using the MTN app. Just open FibreX, select new customer and plan you want, and all available locations are listed. It's not always up to date, though. My street hasn't been listed yet, for example.

5. There are currently five plans, defined by bandwidth.

20mbps - 15k monthly
50mbps - 25k monthly
100mbps - 50k monthly
150mbps - 60k monthly
300mbps - 100k monthly

And on to more technical information.

1. My Fibre X router is a ZTE F670L. It's not a particularly great router by most accounts, but that can be expected considering the fact that it's free. It also gets the job done.

2. The ZTE F670L lacks any sort of battery or backup power. And runs off a 12v 1A power supply. Ideally you need a steady power supply, or a power bank with a 12v output. Thankfully I have one from an older MTN router I bought. You can theoretically also buy a USB to 12v barrel connector cable and use with a regular power bank, assuming the power bank supports 12v output anyway.

3. The router interface is solid. Has all the necessary features including security controls, firewall and DNS settings with filters and the rest. There is no data usage page, however, but that's not really necessary seeing as FibreX is unlimited. Regrettably, my router does not pair with any of the ZTElink apps. I'm not sure if that's down to the router itself or modifications by MTN. Either way, you're stuck with just the standard web interface.

And on to speed
.

I'm on the 50mbps plan and Ookla's speed tests generally always give a dl of 47-55mbps, and ul of ~25mbps. Ergo, just as advertised. Idle ping is typically under 30ms.

I've not had my speeds drop at all, even in peak usage periods around 5-9pm. I should point out, though, that I'm probably one of the few people on the service in my area at the moment. Not sure if that's a factor.

So far I've been able to stream ~8GB 4K movie files off my RD service without any buffering. I'm happy with it. It's a significant upgrade on Airtel's 30k monthly 20mbps unlimited plan which I was using prior. Speed tests usually start off with dl speeds of up to ~150mbps before dropping to 50mbps as capped by my plan, so I believe anything up to the 60k for 150mbps plan should be fine. I'm not sure it can deliver 300mbps, though.

As for range, I've had no issues anywhere in my reasonably large apartment even on the 5GHz network.

You're welcome! I was considering it for months and there was pretty much zero information online from actual users, which is why I made the thread.

I got to confirm from their marketer it hasn’t gotten to my street, even though it’s on a street down the road.
I guess I’ll settle for Airtel unlimited for now.
Thank you.

If it is on a street down the road I am sure it can easily be extended to your street. That will probably be the Job of the agent that comes to do the installation.

In my case it also wasn't in my street, my street was not part of the locations available.. but some other streets in my estate were available, there were also some areas just outside my estate.

So what I just did while filling out the form on their website was to select the closest street to mine.

When the agent came around the connection ran from outside my street. The installation took about four to five hours.

And the rest is history 😏

I've installed 2 separate fibre optics services in my house now. My issue with them is downtime, even though both networks are good and fast, 5 - 7 days in every month there'll always be a cable cut or downtime. Is it the same on mtn as well, before I add this one join.

Is the airtel truly unlimited boss and what's the monthly cost....

Most reviews say it’s unlimited, personally I don’t think I’ll be hitting above 500gb per month.
Their subscription starts from 30k for 20mbs, reason why I preferred the FibreX.

It's not truly unlimited in the sense of say Starlink or MTN fibrex. I can confirm to you that there's a FUP and once you hit it, your speed gets seriously throttled, you probably have not so your speed remains as advertised

You may feel it’s unlimited, that might be because you don’t use as much data as a very heavy user.
I’ve got two neighbors using the unlimited, the one using above 1tb experiences slower speed (throttling) when he crosses a certain data amount.

Terrible speed

First month of use was as good as it gets.

I experienced some downtime on about four different days, but each of those didn't last more than ten minutes at most. Most people wouldn't even notice, and regular mobile data gets more downtime than that.

Renewed my subscription at 25k for 50mbps. If September and October go well, I will likely switch to the 6 months plan for 120k and save some money.

My opinion on the downtime.
For the average Nigerian internet user, your best bet is likely a wireless/5G modem.

The key reason is that it bypasses the major infrastructural challenges (cable cuts, power grid instability) that plague Nigeria's fixed-line networks. While the technology itself may not be as powerful as fiber, its reliability and ease of access make it a far more practical choice for daily use in most locations.

However, if you live in a well-established, premium neighborhood that has a proven, reliable fiber optic network, and your internet usage is extremely demanding (e.g., you are a professional gamer or your business depends on zero-downtime), then fiber is still the superior choice.

I have MTN and Airtel wireless routers and experienced more downtime on those than FibreX.

All the times MTN network disappears counts as downtime. Airtel was even worse.

True, I have experienced even more downtime on their wireless devices. Happened quite frequently when I was using MTN 5G broadband. The Network just decides to go off from time to time.

A month and about two weeks into my FibreX life and I am yet to experience any downtime 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

Yeah, the best thing about FibreX is that it's not affected by peak usage periods or rain. Usually with mobile data, speeds tend to drop in the evenings. That isn't the case for FibreX. Also completely unaffected by rain.

That said, I had a weird outage last night. Wasn't like previous ones where internet service disappears for a few minutes, this one had my router LOS flashing red for over an hour--indicating a lack of signal entirely. I think likely there was a power outage at the main service point. First time I've had such an occurrence and not something I'm keen on.

Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for this, very helpful. I'm wondering, can I use my MTN 5G Router with it? I'm guessing it will work way better than whatever they're giving for free. And I see it has a port for a network cable (not sure if input or output though)

Probably not, since each router is linked to the FNID.

There's a single network-in port for the fiber optic cable (which is how you get your service, it's not a wireless service), and four ethernet ports.

Good afternoon bro, I had just one question.

1. I have try checking my state Edo in MTN App and I didn’t see it there.

2. You said it available in Edo state and how am I going to request for it since I didn’t see Edo state or Benin city listed on the MTN app?

My regards
