FCT: Resident Doctors Begin 7-day Warning Strike by Nemere2020(op): 10:59am On Sep 08, 2025
The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has commenced a seven-day warning strike, citing longstanding systemic issues within the FCT health system.

The industrial action was announced on Monday via a communiqué jointly signed by the association’s President, Dr George Ebong, and other executive members.

According to the statement, the FCT health sector has been plagued by chronic underfunding, staff shortages, and poor working conditions — challenges which the doctors say have reached a breaking point. The group is calling for urgent and comprehensive reforms to address these systemic failings.

Dr Ebong expressed concern over the increasing workload faced by resident doctors, who are often forced to manage multiple departments simultaneously due to inadequate staffing.

“Our members are stretched beyond capacity. This is not only unsustainable but also compromises the quality of care delivered to patients,” he said.

The strike is expected to affect services in government-owned hospitals and clinics within the FCT, including general outpatient care, specialist consultations, and certain in-patient services.

The warning strike comes amid broader concerns within Nigeria’s healthcare system, where brain drain, insufficient infrastructure, and delayed payments have contributed to recurring industrial actions across several states.

Resident doctors form a significant part of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce. Their roles are vital in tertiary and secondary care institutions, making any strike action highly disruptive.

They treat the healthcare system shabbily because they don't utilise it

As long as they can go out to seek health care abroad, they don't care about the dilapidated health system in Nigeria

All the doctors should be immediately placed on suspension without pay.
The doctors that even started the warning strike should be sacked and have their medical license revoked with possible prison time!

Medicine is a calling to help the sick not to seek financial riches!

The day we start insisting on politicians getting their medical treatments only in Nigeria, that's the day they'll start focusing on developing the healthcare sector

Until the day your loved ones will need an urgent medical intervention and you're told there's not enough hands to help because all the available medical staff are busy with more urgent cases. Keep fooling yourself in an attempt to chase clout.

I thought they said Tinubu has subsidized cost of dialysis. Until we enact laws ending medical tourism for politicians, our health sector will remain in shambles

so when you sack everyone ,who will do the work, when even the people on ground are not enough to cater for the sick people, just pray you never fall victim of any medical emergency that needs to be solved within an hour and you realize that the doctor to attend to your case has been sacked or suspended and the one who handle your case cannot get to your in the next 12 hours, na there you go know whether to sack the few doctors left is a good idea.

We hope to visit able to correct this medical tourism by our political class. And it's very wrong. If they continue to do that, they won't make it a priority to improve on our medical infrastructure and services within the country.

Nigerian medical doctors are one of those earnings highest salary in Nigeria now. They should have patience for tinubu economic development 🤣.

Well, residents doctors are students, whom the federal government is paying for doing residency program.
A resident doctor earns between 350,000 to 500,000 per month Now. So why are they going on strike?
staff shortages cannot be fixed as far as the medical and dental council refuses to stop the exodus of medical doctors out of the country.

So, to cut story short, tinubu should fix the value of Naira, if Nigeria currency which is currently valueless (toilet paper) is fixed with a value of 100 Naira to a dollar, a lot of problems with staff shortages will be stopped. Including renumeration.
