She was just a victim of circumstance. I guess she must have seen some ugly things about him that could be one of the reasons she decided to end the relationship two(2) years ago. But this failure of a guy refused to move on and improve. What a wicked world. He mustn't go free.

Sometimes you mustn't see ugly things in someone before you decide to move on.
She may have found someone that said he would marry her while her murderer wasn't ready.
She may not have liked the sex with him while the other was better in bed;while on the converse the murderer was demanding too much sex but the other guy just liked to be with her.
It may even be different religious orientation
The point is nothing ugly may be in someone,yet the other party just didn't want to be in the relationship or simply found someone better,less demanding,more or less religious,more or less outgoing, etc
