Fresh details have emerged about why President Bola Tinubu sacked Fegho Umunubo, his Special Assistant on Digital and Creative Economy, who worked in the office of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Sources in the presidency told PREMIUM TIMES that Mr Umunubo was dismissed after being linked to a series of scams in the creative industry, which he allegedly executed under the cover of his presidential office.


According to presidency sources, Mr Umunubo struck dubious sponsorship deals with filmmakers and creatives, promising government-backed funding and visibility that never materialised.


One of the most notable cases involves a sponsorship deal with author and filmmaker Arese Ugwu, creator of the “The Smart Money Woman” series.


Documents seen by this newspaper show that Mr Umunubo, acting in his official capacity as the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and Creative Economy, signed an agreement promising N10 million sponsorship for the premiere and marketing of Lara Unlimited, a spin-off of Ms Ugwu’s work.

The agreement included extensive promotional rights for the presidency’s digital economy office to be branded on event backdrops and movie posters, a 30-45 second advert before screenings, features in podcast episodes, and shoutouts from Ms Ugwu and other influencers.


However, Mr Umunobo failed to honour the terms of the agreement.

On 30 August, Ms Ugwu publicly accused Mr Umunubo of fraud in a post on Instagram. “Just so it’s clear that I’m not crashing out over 5 million naira as Fegho Umunubo would like you to believe,” she wrote.

According to presidency insiders, this became a recurring pattern. Nollywood people were lured into similar deals that never materialised, with Mr Umunubo allegedly leveraging his proximity to power to win trust.

“He scammed multiple people in the industry using that office,” a presidency source told PREMIUM TIMES.


Mr Umunubo was quietly relieved of his duties in August, but sources said he continued to parade himself as a presidential aide.

This forced the State House to issue a public announcement on Monday, formally announcing his disengagement.

This is the first time the Tinubu administration has issued such a disclaimer against a presidential aide.

PREMIUM TIMES reached out to Mr Umunubo via his Instagram handle. He has not responded to our message as of the time of this report.

He, however, reacted to the news of his dismissal, writing on Instagram that: “It’s been an honour to serve this great country and the creative industry.” (PREMIUM TIMES)

Its down to those he scammed to go and present a petition against him to the police and EFCC from there the matter be investigated and if there established cases of fraud and breach of contract between him and the petitioners, he will be charged to court.

Do you expect his employers who have sacked him and issued a public disclaimer on him to now file a case against him when they are not a party to his misdeeds?

If the allegations are true, that is bad. There are many expectations from youth who are in the corridor of power.

Fraud is not one of them.

This government will not tolerate crime. This is a young man given the opportunity and now he’s been involved in scams most Nigerians are scammers only waiting for opportunity.

Yes, he was accused of obtaining by false pretence.

On 30 August, Ms Ugwu publicly accused Mr Umunubo of fraud in a post on Instagram. “Just so it’s clear that I’m not crashing out over 5 million naira as Fegho Umunubo would like you to believe,” she wrote. “He owes me N10 million, but this is about something bigger… It’s about dangling a fund of $617 million and another of N5 billion for over 12 months… playing games with my resilience when I was trying so hard to pivot from the gbese I was already in. Then finding out that he had no authorisation to be signing the agreements he was signing or making the promises he was making on behalf of the Vice President of Nigeria.”

If they did and he was found wanting, which possibly led to his sack, the next line of action is to start his prosecution immediately.

You are perfectly right. Social media wouldn't give you justice but advertisement of your case and many would laugh and sympathize with you, that's the social media final judgement. Rather, the scammed parties should come together or go individually to make a report to EFCC so that the culprit can be invited and investigated.....this is a serious case of misrepresentation and fraud.....however, I believe his employers too, Tinubu & Company Of Nigeria Limited should have investigated him too before terminating his appointment ..........in a lighter note......People wey dey get this guy's face and physique are always scammers or engaging in a very dubious character......I always avoid such people......even when they talk to you, they always talk as if they have all the solution to all the problems of the world......they are most 90% scammer.......I called them snaky face guys, even Tinubu belong to the same click as this guy, though Tinubu is not, I would want to believe though, ain't into scamming people... 😂 😂 😂 😂 But Nigeria dey scam me now and who be the Presido.....na Tinubu.....in other words, I could say Tinubu is scamming me die presently for my country..... 😂

His employers must have received word of his misdeeds and did their own in house investigation and came to their own conclusion that it will be best he be fired before bringing disrepute to their office and the Presidency.

The same employers had to issue a public disclaimer after learning that he is Still going about scamming people using his former designation and office.

His employers are not the victims of his crime and neither do they have powers to prosecute any case before a competent Court.

And as per cases of fraud , there are the Police Fraud Unit and EFCC empowered to carry out investigation and prosecutorial functions .

Even at that, the Police Fraud Unit and EFCC can only investigate a case of fraud when a petition is submitted to them by a victim. This is one of the guiding rules in investigating and prosecuting fraud cases as enshrined in the criminal 419 code.

Just as there must be a body to ascertain that there has been a murder, so also in fraud cases must there be a victim willing to testify .

His former employers are not his victims neither are they in any way an investigative or prosecutionall body

The passage you quoted says nothing about him collecting money …

Instead it says he made promises he wasn’t authorized to make… and unless those promises included payments not mentioned in the article, I don’t see the case for theft here
