The Abia State Government has banned graduation ceremonies for nursery and primary school pupils, as well as secondary school students who are not in exit classes, in both public and private schools.

The government also announced the abolition of compulsory combination of textbooks and workbooks by publishers, a practice that prevents parents from reusing textbooks for younger children.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed the decisions while briefing journalists on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. He explained that the measures were introduced to curb what he described as “exploitation of parents” by school proprietors.


“Going forward, graduation ceremonies in our schools will only be limited to Primary Six pupils and SS3 students,” Kanu said, adding that stakeholders in the education sector, including WAEC, NECO, NUT, ANCOPS, ETA, publishers and others, had already agreed on the policy.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, said the decision to separate textbooks from workbooks would further reduce the financial burden on parents. “The workbook will be used for assignments by a given child, while the textbook remains reusable by younger siblings,” he explained.

On newly recruited teachers, Ubochi disclosed that the state had concluded a two-week intensive training to equip them with 21st-century teaching skills. He added that final postings would be released this week, with incentives provided for those deployed to hard-to-reach areas.

The state government also cautioned schools against charging excessive fees for certificates. According to Ubochi, collection of Primary Six and basic education certificates should not exceed ₦2,000, while secondary school certificates should not cost more than ₦4,000.

Also present at the briefing were the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Ogbonnaya, and the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma.

Every year na him my children dey graduate for here. I did not grow up with this and I resent the idea as there is nothing to motivate the child. Na so dem go they give everybody wey dey class award for attendance sef.

Every year parents will have to buy the same test books again for younger siblings, what kind of day light rubbery is that?

The last one way I go two women de drag over their sons which one go be king, no be small quarrel that day, them don add money tire, any amount the other woman put, em opponent go add extra. Where the whole matter weak me be say e get one man way wan stop the whole drama, em come add extra 10k to put big margin and discourage the other woman from going further, the woman way the 10k reach em son side rush go twerk for the man laps, oboy everywhere explode.

Well its up to them must have a valid reason.

Another should be compulsory lesson after normal school hours. It should be banned. It's all exploitation.

Why has Lagos not made this amazing announcement plus many others

Good ideas I remember those days the textbook my elder sister use naim I go still use for the next class. Once that session ends my papa go call the 3 of us wey dey secondary school say make we bring out the textbooks we him buy for all us. He go begin dey check am one after the other anybody we tear or rough his or her own dey trouble but before he give you text as him buy am he go use old calendar cover am well for us use him hand write our names on it. But now graduation every year,buying of text book every month mesef as a father I don tire.where dem graduate go.
All these na way wey school owners take dey collect money from parents even holiday coaching I still don't buy the idea.when children suppose rest and enjoy their holidays them dey tell them come do lesson or coaching. Na wa o
