The people of Ikirun in Osun State are living under constant environmental and health threats. For years, residents have cried out about the blinding dust, choking fumes, and discolored wells surrounding Prism Steel Mills. Yet, despite repeated petitions, letters, and media attention, the company continues operations unchecked, leaving the community to pay the price: sick children, damaged farmland, contaminated water, and deteriorating quality of life. This is not merely a local grievance, it is an environmental and public health emergency. Independent studies have already confirmed the danger. A 2023 soil study around Prism Steel Mills found alarming concentrations of toxic heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and nickel, all of which pose severe health risks to residents. University analyses of water samples reveal contamination of the community’s wells, their primary source of drinking water. Social and public health researchers have further documented reduced crop yields, persistent respiratory illnesses, and declining living conditions caused by the mill’s pollution. Although government agencies have at times threatened enforcement, follow-through has been inconsistent, leaving Ikirun residents abandoned. In light of these facts, we demand immediate intervention. Prism Steel Mills must suspend operations until a transparent, independent environmental and public health audit is completed by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) and the Osun State Ministry of Environment, with international technical support where necessary. Comprehensive environmental testing, covering air, soil, groundwater, and even the food chain, must be conducted by accredited laboratories, and results made publicly available in a language the community can understand. Equally urgent is the need for medical action. Free screenings and long-term health monitoring should be provided for residents, especially children, pregnant women, and farmworkers who are most vulnerable. Immediate medical care must be offered to those already suffering. Alongside this, remedial measures are required: pollution control upgrades, soil cleanup, provision of safe water, and compensation for losses in both health and livelihoods. Transparency is non-negotiable. Prism Steel Mills must publish its Environmental Impact Assessment, emissions-monitoring data, and compliance records. Where laws have been broken, penalties must be enforced. An independent community oversight committee, made up of residents, civil society, environmental experts, and relevant agencies — should be established to monitor compliance and remediation. We also call on international organisations, development partners, and NGOs to step in where local enforcement has failed. Independent sampling, technical support for remediation, and funding for community health programs are urgently needed to ensure impartiality and to secure long-term recovery for Ikirun. This is both a moral and legal imperative. Failure to act now is a direct sentence against the children, farmers, and future generations of Ikirun. We cannot allow profits to continue taking precedence over human lives. The time for promises and half-measures has passed. We demand action, clear, measurable, and enforced, to save Ikirun from a deepening environmental and human disaster. #StandWithIkirun #EnvironmentalJustice #CleanWaterNow #HoldPollutersAccountable |
