Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, a journalist in Kebbi State, has reportedly been arrested after releasing a video that revealed the deplorable state of Kangiwa General Hospital, where an elderly patient was seen lying on a bed frame without a mattress.

Activists condemn arrest of journalist who exposed Kebbi hospital’s neglect

A journalist in Kebbi State, Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa, has been detained after releasing a video showing the poor conditions at Kangiwa General Hospital.

The footage, which circulated widely on social media, depicted patients lying on bare metal beds without mattresses, sparking public outrage and renewed scrutiny of the state’s healthcare system.

Activists and critics have condemned the detention, accusing state authorities of attempting to silence reporting rather than address the systemic neglect highlighted by the video.

Dan Bello, a human rights advocate, stated on Tuesday on X in a video that the arrest, reportedly ordered by Governor Nasiru Idris, represented “a new wave of tyranny ” and called for Kangiwa’s immediate release.

Similarly, the Take It Back Movement, a pro-democracy advocacy group that campaigns for accountability and transparency in government, also condemned the arrest.

Posting on X, the group said, “Kebbi Gov. Nasir Idris has thrown journalist Hassan Mai-Waya Kangiwa in detention for exposing the rot in govt hospitals. This is sheer tyranny! We demand Hassan’s immediate release. Silencing truth will not stop the people’s resistance!”

The incident has raised serious questions about freedom of the press and government transparency in the state.

Many observers argue that instead of investigating the deficiencies revealed in the video, authorities have opted to target the messenger, sending a chilling message to journalists who report on public service failures.

Media freedom groups and civil society organisations have urged the immediate release of Kangiwa, emphasising that journalists play a vital role in holding public officials accountable and informing citizens about issues that affect their well-being.

This case highlights the continuing tension between Nigerian journalists and government officials over accountability in public institutions, underlining the importance of safeguarding press freedom to ensure transparency and protect citizens’ right to information.

Nigerian politicians are some of the world's most shameless people. Honestly, there are many states in this country that nobody knew existed, including Kebbi.

Instead of taking the right steps to fix your state and put it on the map to attract foreign investments, you are arresting a journalist for exposing how dysfunctional the state is. The journalist should be released and compensated.

The hazard of journalism...

I have nothing to say than...

May God bless Nigerians, because Nigeria is blessed already

It is still poor journalism if you can make a report of which you get arrested at the end of the day. It simply means you did not make a constructive criticism with intent for development.

I was in King's Hospital in Denmark Hill yesterday, sitting in reception of SACU, where we could all hear the private consultation of a patient in a cubicle behind us.

I was so furious that the patient's business was being broadcast so, that I left two complaints.

If this journalist has no permission to record patients, he is definitely breaking the law, though I must admit that is the price he should be prepared to pay to inform us.

If we feel the need to support the journalist, we should gofund for him, and go placard the governor.

That's not how to do it. You do it with sense. Not in a provocative manner that will put your life in jeopardy.

My dear brother
If a journalist wants to be honest in this society, their life will always be in jeopardy.
That's just the truth.

there's a difference between shamelessness and wickedness and I believe wickedness is the word you wanted to use.

Picture this scenario. 1 billion naira is project cost to supply water to your state capital but your people are ignorant and easily distracted. What do you think an average Nigerian governor would do ? Spend one billion on water for his capital or share 5 million on social media influencers who will ridicule and abuse anyone who dares ask the right questions while pocketing the rest and mind you, that 5m covers every other of the governor's failings meaning multiple developmental projects worth billions of naira are washed out of your memory while moneys agree are budgeted for and released every year for eight years till the next administration. Picture this scenario on repeat since 1999 across regions

I'm giving them a two-day ultimatum to release the journalist now before I seek redress.

What offence did he commit in the first instance?.

Say NO to Intimidation, Oppression and Suppression.

This is Democracy

"If your parents are poor, that doesn't mean you have to be poor"

The above statement cut across so many instances in this economy. I no longer bother myself with political matters, because there's nothing anyone can do. The issue has been eating the fabric of our society since its inception. I now focus on the education of those I love and endeavor to provide for their needs. I believe it is only God's kingdom that can set matters straight

My Nigerian brothers

No matter who sits on that governing throne, no matter how good the individual is, they cannot fix what has been eating us up. The best thing is for each one of us to hope in God, and try to show love to one another. Because things are definitely going to get worse

These politicians do these because they know the people they govern are very docile.

If we as a people were more active and make ourselves fearful to them, they’ll rethink their ways.

In all these, you’ll still see people supporting and cheering on these politicians even if they’re affected equally or even worse. Ask them why they do this, they say he’s my brother, he’s my religious brother, we’re from the same state, region etc.

What do they gain from this their “brother” absolutely nothing or peanuts.
