The New Tax Acts & Tax Id: What You Need To Know by DrMB(op): 2:21pm On Sep 12, 2025
Do you run a business, earn income, or plan to open an investment account in Nigeria?
Did you know you’ll soon need a Tax ID for banking, insurance, and pensions?
What happens if you don’t get one before January 1, 2026?
The new Tax Acts are here to ensure fairness, everyone who earns taxable income contributes, while protecting low-income citizens. But first, you need a Tax ID.
THE NEW TAX ACTS & TAX ID — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

⭕️Only someone who engages in economic activity to earn income is taxable - taxable person.

⭕️All taxable persons to register with the tax authority & obtain a Tax ID.

⭕️Banks & other financial institutions are required to request a Tax ID from taxable persons.

⭕️Your NIN or CAC RC No. will serve as yout Tax ID.

⭕️Your existing TIN remains valid.

Taxable ID is a unique number linked to your identity.

⭕️You can obtain one from FIRS, State IRS, or JTB offices. It is also available online via FIRS website.

⭕️Tax ID is free.

⭕️For registered businesses, your personal TIN/Tax ID is sufficient.

⭕️Unregistered entities [NGOs, incorporated trustees, and other registered entities inclusive] visit the FIRS or apply online with your CAC documents to get one.

⭕️Foreign-based Nigerians can obtain a Tax ID using their NIN for banking or investment purposes in Nigeria. Check the NIMC website.

⭕️Foreign companies and non-resident entities providing services to Nigerian customers need a Tax ID. However, those on passive incomes like dividends, royalties, rent may not need to register but must provide relevant information.

⭕️Govt Agencies are not exempted from taxes - all must register for tax and obtain their Tax ID.

⭕️A taxable person without a Tax ID may not be able to operate bank accounts, insurance policies, pension accounts, or investment accounts by 01 Jan 2026.

⭕️There are other sanctions also applicable to taxable persons without Tax ID.

⭕️This process will simplify identification, reduce duplication, and close loopholes that allow tax evasion.

⭕️There will be fairness so that everyone who earns taxable income contributes their share while protecting low-income citizens who are not taxable.

They say obtaining a Tax ID is free but I'm sure by next year corrupt government officials will start extorting money from citizens because of it

Why is tax such the biggest picture of this Government?

Truly, the devil came but to steal and destroy.

You cant be taxing your citizens at the same time remove subsidy... It's total wickedness

Last month, I needed a personal tax id as I don’t want to use my business tax id to open an account.

Can you believe I went to FIRS website to obtain my id and the website refuses to do what it was designed to do?

This is not the first time Nigerian government website has been proving useless. Especially CAC website, yet they will be shouting file your returns like they are doing their jobs themselves.

Let me see who will come and query me to give accountability. You will answer questions yourself.

This may not be possible because government needs you to have a tax ID so that you can be a taxable person. Government needs you to have it more than you need it.

These kind of reforms are actually commendable "on paper" because of the motive/intention the government sells to the people (they make us believe it's geared towards general economic growth);...
but the real question is: what measures are being put in place to ensure fairness by government, and what assurances do we have that this won't be another avenue or tool for the government of the day to use in hunting or victimizing perceived political opponents just like the efcc has become??🤷🏾‍♂️

Re: The New Tax Acts & Tax Id: What You Need To Know by ibechris(m):
It is this singular policy that would create the hardest hardship in this country.

Many people especially rich individuals who own companies will increase the price of goods and services just to pay up these taxes.

Importers would increase theirs.

Spare parts sellers would add theirs.

Everything go rise...only illiterates who support evil govt would be blinded with "it will favour Us mentality".

This tax policy go wound many people and its implications is dangerous to the people.

Re: The New Tax Acts & Tax Id: What You Need To Know by Rindo69: 8:19pm On Sep 13, 2025
What else do you need to know...

All inflow into your account will be considered income and will be taxable unless you can show otherwise. So you'll need to have an accountant to file your taxes ...the smarter your accountant , the less your tax liability will be!

Make sure anyone sending you money references it properly else it will be considered income and once income exceeds 800k a year, you are taxed.

No response from FIRS after tracking number was issued, very useless set of people that cannot reply mail. Nigeria even failed to organize a digital space! So pathetic

At least voters will now understand that elections have consequences. The way politicians approach elections as do-or-die affairs, the electorates will also cultivate the same attitude towards elections. We must have a better country by all means. cheesy
