The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved 14 political associations to advance to the next stage of registration as political parties ahead of the 2027 general election, News360 Nigeria reports.

This comes after the review of 171 applications submitted by associations seeking recognition.

In a statement issued on Thursday by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, INEC confirmed that 157 associations failed to meet the initial requirements.

The 14 successful associations will undergo further scrutiny, including physical verification of their claims, before receiving final approval.

Leading the list of pre-qualified associations is the All Democratic Alliance, widely speculated to be a platform for opposition coalitions against President Bola Tinubu’s government.

Others include African Transformation Party (ATP), Advance Nigeria Congress (ANC), Abundance Social Party (ASP), African Alliance Party (AAP), Citizens Democratic Alliance (CDA), Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA), Grassroots Initiative Alliance (GRIP), Green Future Party (GFP), Liberation Party’s Party (LPP), National Democratic Party (NDP), National Reform Party (NRP), Patriotic People’s Alliance (PPA), and People’s Freedom Party (PFP).

Olumekun stated that all applications were assessed based on compliance with Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), Section 79 of the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

“Out of the total number of applications received, 14 associations have met the requirements to proceed to the next stage while 157 have not.

The Commission shall officially communicate the decision arising from today’s meeting to all the associations in the next 24 hours,” the statement read.

The Commission has invited interim chairmen and secretaries of the successful associations to a briefing scheduled for September 17, 2025, at its Abuja headquarters.

Olumekun emphasized that party registration remains an ongoing process under Nigerian law, and INEC will continue to consider applications from associations that meet the necessary requirements.
