The Coldest Place in Nigeria is Gembu, Taraba State - Not Jos, Plateau State For years, many Nigerians have assumed that Jos, Plateau State, holds the record as the coldest place in the country. While Jos is indeed known for its cool climate, the actual coldest location in Nigeria is Gembu, a town on the Mambilla Plateau in Taraba State. Sitting at an elevation of about 1,800 meters above sea level, Gembu experiences extremely low temperatures, sometimes dropping below 3°C at night, especially during the harmattan season. Its high altitude, lush green hills, and misty mornings make it Nigeria’s true “cold city.” On the other hand, Jos (located about 1,200 meters above sea level) has a temperate climate but doesn’t reach the biting cold levels of Gembu. Travelers who have been to the Mambilla Plateau often describe Gembu as “Nigeria’s little Europe” because of its weather, tea plantations, waterfalls, and breathtaking scenery. Beyond its weather, Gembu and the Mambilla Plateau are also home to stunning tourist attractions: • Tea plantations – Nigeria’s only highland tea farms, with breathtaking scenery. It's the largest tea farm in West Africa with 615 hectares of land. • Mayo Gade, Mayo Gwoi and Mayo Ndaga waterfalls – hidden gems surrounded by lush forest • Chappal Waddi (Gangirwal), The Mountain of Death – at 2,419m, it is the highest mountain in Nigeria and West Africa. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28mmjeLxB5I • Gashaka Gumti National Park – Nigeria’s largest national park, rich with wildlife and nature trails. So, the next time you hear someone say Jos is the coldest place in Nigeria, you can let them know the crown truly belongs to Gembu, Taraba State.

Nigeria has a lot of tourist attraction that can bring in more revenue into the country but everybody mindset is always on crude oil. Who is the minister of tourist and communication? This should be their major selling point and not about sitting in Abuja everyday |

When I served here in 2018-19, even corp members from Plateau state confirmed that Plateau is not anywhere as cold as Sardauna LGA. I do enjoyed this place to the point that I spent extra one month after service just to enjoy the scenery and weather. The first one month of my stay up there was hell, omo I apply for relocation tire because I have never ever experienced that kind of cold in my life, cold wey dey give me pains in my bones. Nice waterfalls almost everywhere and with fresh spring water (was what i drank throughout my stay) fresh cheap fruits in abundance, honey too, I chop banana tire. Na there i see cows wey almost big like elephants, I saw corn with different colours, pink, purple corn. Their egusi is gotten from a very kind of large sun flower. I still have so many memorable pictures |
