Dear Nairalanders, Kindly advise accordingly. The car in question is a 2007 Toyota Corolla with mileage of over 200k. I’ve noticed it consumes oil. I currently use Mobil 2000 5W-30, and usually have to top up after about 3–4 weeks post-service. Even while topping up, I’ve always maintained the same oil type. However, during a recent top-up, I switched to Mobil 1000 (5W-30), and I observed that the oil lasted longer before the consumption became noticeable. My concern now is: 👉 Should I stick with the new (lower grade) Mobil 1000 since it seems to reduce consumption? 👉 Or should I have the piston rings and engine checked instead? Thank You. |

akinsanya005:Since your car is over 200k miles, it will short oil no matter what. Your best bet is to use 5w30 high mileage or 10w30 . Those are thicker and you should be fine until next oil change

akinsanya005:How many kilometers or miles do you cover within 3 to 4 weeks? That's a more accurate way of determining how bad the oil consumption is. Just saying 3 to 4 weeks doesn't give any reasonable information. Also, when topping off, what quantity of oil do you add? Do you add up to a liter? Anyways, in every thing you do, never open your engine in the name of checking rings. Or that engine is gone. Provide the information above. So we take it up from there. |

Your rings are stuck due to carbon build up on pistons..valves... Valve seals symptoms...blue smoke on cold start up. And vanishes after 1min Stuck rings. Smokes all thru. Go and buy thinner 1 liter Buy 25 litres. Take the car to express and match acceleration to 120kph for good 30mins.if e still short oil let me know .. |

sola12:If your oil doesn't really need topping up until it is time to change it, no loss of power and car runs fine under load, then it is most likely oil going past the valve stem seals after your car has been sitting a while, if that's the case and issue is fresh, the blue smoke usually disappears within seconds, it must have been going on for a long time if it takes up to a minute to stop after start up, have a professional fix you up. |
