Debunking Loan Myths in Nigeria: What You Should Know Before Borrowing

Loans are often misunderstood in Nigeria. Many people shy away from borrowing because of fear, while others fall victim to quick-fix schemes due to lack of proper knowledge. To make better financial decisions, it’s important to separate fact from myth.

1. Interest Rates
A common misconception is that all loans come with “killer” interest rates. In reality, interest rates vary depending on the lender, loan type, and repayment period. Microfinance banks and reputable digital lenders often provide competitive rates. Always compare options before borrowing.

2. Loan Terms
Some borrowers assume loans are endlessly flexible. In truth, every loan comes with clear terms—covering repayment schedules, penalties, and fees. Reading and understanding these terms prevents surprises later on.

3. Legitimate Lenders
Not all lenders are scammers. Licensed financial institutions and registered microfinance banks follow regulatory guidelines that protect borrowers. Checking if a lender is accredited by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is a good starting point.

4. Red Flags
Be wary of lenders who demand upfront fees, hide key details, or pressure you into instant borrowing.

See what Pastor Eneche said about loan company He describes them as “agents of the devil in covenant with the spirit of debt”.

I wonder what level of thinking the man had before he made such disgusting statements thereby watering down the business and his congregants seated there applauding him over the mockery.

Before you borrow money look at the interest rates is it something you can afford? If you can't afford the interest rates look elsewhere to source for money to take care of your needs

Its pride that makes people go to loan apps and companies. if you have friends and family that are doing well its better to swallow pride and borrow from them. Fear of what people will say and they dont want their inner circle knowing they're owing a mutual friend or family.

Getting a loan is not a bad idea, but refusing to pay back is the problem.

Not everyone has the luxury of having family members and friends who can squeeze out something out of their pocket to help you while you’re still on your feet breathing..

If you go through people’s mobile phones you’ll understand that what many have are phone numbers and not contacts.

Are you a contact to someone else or just another phone number ?

Loan isn’t bad in itself. People who borrow aren’t greedy or too proud to reach out to their families/friends for financial help; thing is, it’s easier & convenient to borrow from financial institutions than from acquaintances.

It’s for that reason most rich men who need funds would rather approach their financial institutions than personal friends/acquaintances for a loan; it not only maintains the level of respect they enjoy, it’s also a way of separating business from personal r/ships.

Now, to the companies that offer lending services, I don’t believe they’re evil or agents of the devil or whatever. They’re just cut throat businesses out to make a profit, exploit the gaps in the system and the people.

First of all, these companies are options because Nigeria doesn’t have a credit system, no unemployment benefits, our financial institutions only lend to those with verifiable means of repayment and many Nigerians love freebies among others.

On the borrowers’ parts, many borrow with the intention not to pay back; borrow without a guaranteed means of paying back, don’t care about the T&Cs and are dishonest.

Notwithstanding, government just has to strengthen regulations and oversight to ensure Nigerians are not exploited with high interest rates (I can understand that this may be due to the fact that the lending environment is highly volatile), dehumanized or subjected to embarrassment (posting debtors photos with weird captions, sending text messages to debtors’ contacts, calling to threaten debtors’ contacts who have absolutely nothing to do with the loan or the person that borrowed etc.) because they took loans.

There is nothing bad or evil about taking loans.

Sometimes it's the best way to grow the size of your business

Why is it that people rarely default on free/low interest religion loans unlike regular loan giver..... It's simply because of high interest. The interest part should be worked upon. It kills both parties to the loan

Yes, from legit ones with flexible payments and interests not from those predatory ones like loan sharks with high interest rates and short repayment time
