President Tinubu cuts short foreign trip as Governor Siminalayi Fubara returns from London ahead of Thursday’s reinstatement and democratic transition in Rivers State.


President Bola Tinubu and suspended Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara are both expected back in Nigeria today, Tuesday, in preparation for the long-awaited restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State scheduled for Thursday, September 18.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu cut short his annual vacation in France and the United Kingdom to attend to urgent national issues. The President, who departed Nigeria on September 4 for a 10-day private visit, is now scheduled to land in Abuja to immediately resume official duties.

While abroad, Tinubu also engaged in high-level diplomacy, including a private luncheon with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris. Discussions reportedly centered on boosting bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and security to strengthen prosperity and stability for both nations.

Similarly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has been in London, is expected to return today after his initial rescheduled arrival. His comeback will pave the way for his reinstatement as Rivers governor on Thursday, effectively ending six months of emergency rule in the state.

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), has overseen the state since March when President Tinubu declared emergency rule amid political turmoil and violent unrest. On Sunday, Ibas led a thanksgiving service in Port Harcourt to mark the handover process, while a public lecture themed “Democracy and Good Governance” is set for today at the Government House Banquet Hall.
