Breaking: Flooding hits Anambra, 15 communities Submerged

By OGEMDI OZOEMENAM, Awka

No fewer than fifteen out of the sixteen communities in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra state have been submerged by flood a day after the Federal government announced the coming of this year's flooding.

Recall that the Nigerian Metrological Agency (NIMET) had earlier announced and listed states in the country that would be affected by flood disaster, asking those residing at the coastal areas to commence relocation.

The flooding was on the account of the last rain fall that caused the overflow of the River Niger and ultimately submerged buildings and and farm lands in the area.

Meanwhile areas that are yet to be affected by the flooding such as Okpoko saw villagers making early harvest of their crops in order to save their crops from being washed away by flood.

However, the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has opened holding centres across vulnerable local government areas and urged residents of riverine communities particularly in Ogbaru, Anambra East, and Anambra West to move to higher grounds for safety.

At the moment, Governor Charles Soludo represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim is working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Federal Government, to step up flood control efforts.

According to the Deputy Governor Ibezim who is the Chairman of the Flood Management Committee, the holding camps are being upgraded and the respective local government Mayor's are on top of the game in ensuring that the impact would be minimal.

He further explained that the joint efforts of the state government and UNDP include clearing blocked drainages, enforcing the “Operation Clear Your Waterways” directive, and advancing plans for long-term dredging of the River Niger.

But some of the villagers who spoke with newsmen lamented that they are yet to take delivery of any relief materials from government or any other agencies.

"The entire 15 out of the 16 communities have been affected by the flooding and no one has come here to see us or may be they are on their way to Ogbaru" the villagers stated.###

The rain this period is something else .. Govt needs to start prioritizing culvert drainages and people should stop blocking the available ones.

Global warming is not a joke anymore...!

The oceans and water bodies are rising massively in volume.

Most cities and places near such water bodies will go underwater in a century.

When it was Lagos, you wept.

It is Anambla, you are weeping.

Putting one and two together, then it is easy to conclude that your weeping cannot end.

Ogbaru and flooding are conjoined twins. Osomala, mputu, atani, ogwu aniocha etc I know are part of the communities affected. undecided

Someone is building massive three storey building ....in the flood zone. Instead of focusing on building camps for victims they should be focusing on relocating them out of the flood zone

Tell them oh. So they can teach their children where not to buy land in the future, where not to bother living, except they go study semi aquatic living at the marine school of Venice..... grin

There are engineering solutions, there are environmental solutions and there are common sense....social solutions. But I guess the people are incapable of applying any.

You will be amazed that certain creatures of the animal kingdom do understand times and seasons and understand how to react to adversity by migration or resilience.

Hmmm na wa o. Imagine one minute there's roof over one's head, another minute, the person is homeless.
Not really a good experience especially in a country such as ours.
May help locate them soon.
