Nigeria Shuts 96 Passport Production Centres, Adopts Centralised System by TheRareGem1(op): 6:05pm On Sep 18, 2025
The Nigeria Immigration Service has officially ended passport production at multiple centres, transitioning to a single, centralised system for the first time in 62 years.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said this on Thursday while inspecting Nigeria’s new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.

He stated that since the establishment of NIS in 1963, Nigeria had never operated a central passport production centre, until now, marking a major reform milestone.

“The project is 100 per cent ready. Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services,” Tunji-Ojo said

He explained that old machines could only produce 250 to 300 passports daily, but the new system had a capacity of 4,500 to 5,000 passports every day.

“With this, NIS can now meet daily demands within just four to five hours of operation,” he added, describing it as a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria

“We promised two-week delivery, and we’re now pushing for one week.

“Automation and optimisation are crucial for keeping this promise to Nigerians,” the minister said.

He noted that centralisation, in line with global standards, would improve uniformity and enhance the overall integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide.

Tunji-Ojo described the development as a step toward bringing services closer to Nigerians while driving a culture of efficiency and total passport system reform.

He said the centralised production system aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda, boosting NIS capacity and changing the narrative for better service delivery.

Which middlemen? The immigration officials are there to make a market of the process. Let them produce 100,000 per day. It will still be scarce.

Nah. We had over 90 places where they print passports. Both home and in the Diaspora so that is fine. Only the Abuja nis hq that will do that henceforth

Is there anything you never doubted before now? It is part of your mission continue. Once it is omoluabi, Buhari, tinubu; it is a must for you to doubt it, we don't expect less. Only anything incompetent likes of Obi does is what you never doubted.
Stop this 'we vs. them' attitude you're displaying here, the elections are long over.

If you can't engage logically by explaining how a centralized passport production location in Abuja could be faster than the existing decentralized setup with 96 locations, then maybe you should quit Nairaland and go rant at a local agbadó beer parlour where your bigotry and bitterness might be better received.

If the old machines in these 96 locations could only print 250 to 300 passports daily, why not simply replace the machines with new ones and keep the 96 locations, rather than centralize everything in Abuja

So everyone that needs an international passport must come to Abuja? Not fair to those outside Abuja. From Sokoto to Abuja is about 18hrs drive.

Having a centralized passport means no irregularities and this makes ICAO, PKD and PKI meaningful to Nigerian passport.

Re: Nigeria Shuts 96 Passport Production Centres, Adopts Centralised System by Solape1: 7:59pm On Sep 18, 2025
This centralisation move is long overdue. For 62 years, multiple passport centres created loopholes, delays & inefficiency. A single hub with 5,000 daily capacity is a smart step toward accountability, faster delivery & restoring credibility to our travel documents.

Its sad to say but I’m a Nigerian that takes everything with a pinch of salt.

It takes an average of 12-18 months to get a drivers license in this country due to “centralization”.
