An Abuja woman was left stunned after a watermelon in her kitchen reportedly exploded overnight.

In a viral video making the rounds online, she is seen walking into her kitchen to find the fruit burst open, with debris and foam scattered across the floor.

Well, even the ones you grew up knowing were different from the ones your great grandparents grew up knowing.

Modifications, whether genetic or not, have been happening to our foods for almost a century.

Your problem or question shouldn't be whether it's GMO... It should be if it was well or properly modified to suit your body and health needs.


Drugs and vaccines, even supplements are examples of consumables artificially modified and generated, yet have remained a mainstay for centuries.

China once had similar problems like this, where farmers cultivating watermelons were witnessing hundreds of exploding fruits. This resulted to a lot of farmers losing lots of cash. The Chinese government traced the cause to either the fertiliser or nutrients used to quickly grow and fatten the watermelons, and immediately banned the usage if such.
Maybe such fertilisers have found their ways into Nigeria

Why are most posters typing GMO/expired melon?

It’s common for watermelons to burst and splatter. In very warm environments, fermentation occurs in the melon giving rise to CO2 which becomes trapped within the core causing an increase in pressure within it. Built up pressure eventually causes the melon to burst.

You are all right. But ask yourselves, do we have extremely sweet fruits in the past? The benchmark now is how sweet fruits are. That's what sells now, so breeders even make note of the brix level to promote their seeds. Brix level has climbed up for all fruits these days.

So, if the rate of fermentation is extremely high in this watermelon, think about what is going on inside you when you eat them? Lol. Now, they tell diabetes patients to stay away from eating fruits which wasn't so before. Lol. Fruits that suppose to support your immune systems when eaten to fight infections are now discarded since they are fuel to keep the pathogens growing....extemely high sugar content. Na waooo!

So, why won't consumers demonize GMOs when they are not doing us so much good?
