Everyone was aware that Newcastle would press high up the pitch, but the question was: how long could they maintain that intensity? The commentators even speculated that Newcastle would tire as the game progressed. In the worst-case scenario, Newcastle might score and then go defensive, inviting increasing pressure, an approach which is not sustainable against a team like Barcelona.

We are going to miss colwill badly this season and this is not even from a defensive point of view. Ever since colwill's injury , our build up from the back has been terrible and slow. Maresca needs to do something to the set up cos it's obvious that the two cB currently starting doesn't have his line breaking passes.

One thing that might actually help now is to play either Enzo or Santos close at the pivot with caicedo and stop the box crashing from either of them, the one of either the LB or RB over laps.. more like a 3 2 4 1 build up

Others won their match and the banter petered out by the next evening Barça won and people wan craze till this moment just because either their expectation of Newcastle beating us failed or their ticket cut. but this is the tactics maresca used against Bayern where enzo played rubbish unlike his performance against psg. Gusto was overlapping like you suggested but his wing was where they attacked from more often, where James and chalobah were supposed to hold down while he overlaps.

santos is good at scoring as shown in his previous two goals, so playing box to box isn't the problem for him. Maresca needs to trust Josh more tbf, and stop waiting to sub players, if he had taken off gusto, enzo, neto and dropped pedro to am and put in guiu/garnacho, estevao, santos but then it wasn't his fault that he trusted them and left them till they fumbled. For now we have no one to replace caicedo when he panicks and makes silly decision or loses form/fitness.

We can hope the team manages till January when we may get guehi, recall sarr or possibly sign wharton
