Checks Expose Presidency’s Poster ‘Evidence’ of N25,000 to Poorest Nigerians as Lies

By Daniel Ojukwu

Dayo Olusegun, a Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, has shared an infographic claiming some testifiers received N25,000 as part of the Renewed Hope Conditional Cash Transfer Programme.

On Friday, Olusegun’s X post showed at least 11 Facebook users who claimed they had received or knew people who had received at least one payment, with others receiving as many as three.

This claim follows the report that the federal government had paid N330 billion to 8.1 million households.

FIJ checked the Facebook pages of those who claimed they received the money.

One of these pages belonged to Sandra Jonah, a graduate of public administration from Benue State University, Makurdi.

Sandra’s comment read: “You have to register oo. I registered since last month and my name came out. 75k. Some 25k but they will receive 3 times.”

Her claim suggests that one can register and receive payments from the government under the scheme, but the National Social Safety-Nets Coordinating Office (NASSCO), responsible for keeping the National Social Register (NSR) and keeping the data of the poorest Nigerians for the scheme, says this is not the procedure.

According to NASSCO, “Each state begins by identifying its poorest Local Government Areas (LGAs), based on poverty data and local consensus. This ensures the NSR begins where the need is greatest.

“Within these LGAs, communities are engaged directly to identify the most deprived areas and households. The process is participatory, inclusive, and locally led. Specially trained Community-Based Targeting Teams (CBTTs), working with community leaders and members, guide the selection of poor and vulnerable households using agreed criteria.

“A scientific algorithm uses collected household data to rank households based on poverty indicators. Those within the bottom six deciles are eligible for inclusion in the National Beneficiary Register (NBR), used for programs like cash transfers.”

Going by this, it would have been impossible to individually register for the NSR or NBR. It also would have been impossible for her name to “come out” as NASSCO does not publish the list but gives access if an official request is made to it through the Data Access Request Form.

FIJ texted Jonah on Facebook, but she had not responded at press time.

Ikemefuna Nwamaka, another testifier who claimed she received N25,000, told FIJ she went to her LGA to register but “forgot about it until my friend said she received it, so I checked and got paid, too”.

Nwamaka did not disclose the state or LGA she registered in, but she insists she got paid.

Both Nwamaka’s and Jonah’s descriptions of their registration processes run contrary to NASSCO’s claims of a community-led documentation and verification approach. But, while they insist it happened, at least one person claimed they lied.

When FIJ called Uzoma Solar, one Facebook user who said he got paid four times, he said, “It was just cruise. Someone said the government was paying, so I just said I received it, too. It was cruise, I did not receive a penny.”

FIJ was unable to contact other beneficiaries, but checks on the pages of Gift Chika Ogbonna and Emeka Abbas, two of those who said they directly benefited, revealed they might not fall within the poorest 30% of their LGAs to meet the geographic targeting approach of the NSR.

FIJ sent them messages but received no response.

Nigerians have, however, began to demanded that the government disclose those it gave the conditional cash.

The Goodluck Jonathan regime was known for SURE-P as its social investment program, from which many people benefited immensely. The Buhari regime was known for N-Power, whose beneficiaries were known and verifiable. All of these was happening while fuel subsidies were still being paid.

But then the Tinubu government came in, removed the subsidy, and instead of continuing with meaningful social investment programs, it distributed a few grains of rice and began spreading lies, falsehoods, and propaganda backed by fake figures about imaginary numbers of Nigerians supposedly receiving N25,000.

If Tinubu were still in the opposition, and a government were dishing out wicked and draconian policies, flagrantly disregarding the constitution and the rule of law, and committing even half of the atrocities his current calamitous regime is committing, he would be out on the streets today, sponsoring, funding, and organizing protests and civil disobedience in Ojota, Lagos, and across Nigeria, calling for regime change.

That negative interpretation is my concern here, and it’s premised on buhari’s support for the election of Bola tinubu as nigeria’s next president. It concerns me because I’m fully convinced that a tinubu presidency would not only destabilise nigeria internally, it would damage nigeria globally, making it a big laughing stock, a butt of dark international jokes!

Truth is, next year’s presidential election will have huge long-term implications, its outcome will affect nigeria for decades. Therefore, no patriotic Nigerian should sit on the fence; that patriotism is what underpins this intervention. To be sure, the presidential election should be as much about character as manifesto.

The presidency is too serious an office to be invested in someone with serious integrity deficit.
Those ignoring character and integrity should remember the Turkish proverb: “When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become a king. The palace becomes a circus.”

The way this thing is manipulated is well known...

If funds are supposed to be paid to 20m people, the 'criminals' will ensure that at least 100 people in each LG get the funds.

Another 1m get through political affiliations and godfathers.

By the time over 1.5m say they got the funds, based on sampling, it would seem as if the whole 20m people got the funds.

The manipulations are very obvious.

If Peter Obi or Atiku wins 2027, so many people will be jailed including the commander-in-chief.
The stealing since 2015 is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria.
