Protesting Workers Shut Down $10 Billion NLNG Train 7 Project by Omooba77(op): 2:36pm On Sep 21, 2025
The Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) $10 billion Train 7 Project has been shut down by protesting workers.

The aggrieved workers are demanding issuance of their tax receipts and tax identification number (TIN) codes.

The workers also alleged the illegal deductions from their monthly pay to the tune of N150,000 under the guise of taxation.

The workers comprising of welders and fitters picketed the administrative building of the SCD JV (Saipem, Chiyoda and Daewoo Joint Venture) in Bonny, Rivers State.

The picketing which started Thursday last week continued till Sunday as they vowed not to vacate the premises until their demands were met.

Daily Trust gathered that the workers who are mainly fitters, welders and junior staff of the company are complaining about the monthly deduction of tax from their salary to the tune of N150,000 for tax clearance over the past two years without the company issuing them with Tax Identification Numbers (TIN).

The workers lamented that despite their efforts in taking the US$10 billion Train 7 project to its present 90% completion, the company still look down on their services.

The protest, led by workers under Daewoo Contractors, reportedly began with fitters and welders before spreading to junior staff.

According the protesting staff, each of them has been subjected to monthly deductions of about N150,000 for tax clearance over the past two years.

The aggrieved staff who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that despite the deductions made over the past two years, NLNG has not issued them their Tax Identification Numbers (TIN).

They further claimed that an audit uncovered anomalies showing that, despite the monthly deductions, the taxes were never remitted to the federal government

They however demanded the release of their TINs and a refund of the monies deducted over the last two years.

The President National Association of Plants Operators (NAPO), Mr Harold Benstowe, called for the anti graft agencies to wade in to the matter.

NAPO, whose members formed major part of workers working on the train 7 project, called on security chiefs in the country including the head of DSS and the IGP to warn their men on ground not to be used to intimidate the worker, else they will drag the agencies to court to get their rules well spelt out.

A personnel from the Corporate Communications department of NLNG, Mr Emma Nwatu, is yet to respond to the messages sent to him on WhatsApp to get the reaction of the company on the protest.

This is just the beginning. This tax matter may cause a lot of rancour come next year. The NLNG Train 7, just like the AKK project, is another ambitious and game-changing infrastructural drive embarked upon by late President Buhari. Tinubu must not use his body language to kill it.

Tinubu started it in Lagos. When you check your tax paid to the record with LIRS there is usually discrepancies. It started when Alpha-Beta took over tax management in Lagos. Criminals everywhere.

Tinubu, the president who wants to use taxes to kill Nigerians, has taken his tax policy to the company

NLNG is a big company though. Some people don't even earn up to 150k in Nigeria.

Let them push for their rights. A lot of players in the private sector don't care about their workers. The only thing our ministry of labor and productivity does is jumping from one meeting to another to prevent strikes. But they're never proactive in following up the working conditions of employees. Is there safe working space? Are workers paid fairly? Are their health catered for?etc. The exploitation in some African and Asian owned companies is out of this world and somehow it doesn't find its way to our media space.

This tax thing will cause serious issue in Nigeria by next year.

The guys involved here are even oil and gas workers who are relatively richer than most citizens.

By time the real struggling Nigerians especially business owners and end-price consumers begin to feel the weight of Tinubu's law, I hope serious uprising will not occur.

Nigeria needs a reset.

The very annoying and obvious thing is that the collective monies and wipped off the hands of suffering people are handed over to governors and politicians who keeps buying properties in UAE, US etc. So sad.

Because most Nigerians will collude and collapse the company. This is the cost of dishonesty and corruption in the country.
