Lekki Traffic: Lagosians Criticise Government For Not Opening The Coastal Road by naptu2(op):
Yesterday confirmed something that I had previously written (I'll search for my previous post later).

I told you that the opposition to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road is purely political. I told you that years ago, when it was politically favourable, many of the same people that are criticising the construction of the road were actually criticising government for not building the road (this was in the period from 2006 to 2014). I also told you why they criticised government then.

They condemned government because they said that there was only one road into and out of Lekki. The Tinubu and Fashola administrations decided to expand the Lekki Expressway and people said that they were stu pid because they couldn't see that what was needed was another road. They said that the Coastal Road and Fourth Mainland Bridge should have been built instead of "Just adding one lane to Lekki Expressway".

Later, when the expressway was being tolled, they said that government should have built the coastal road before tolling the expressway.

Well, yesterday happened.

There was a monster traffic jam yesterday evening when I left the hospital. I gathered that it affected the eastern part of Victoria Island and the western part of Lekki Peninsula. It was partly due to people leaving their locations at the same time after the heavy rain that fell yesterday morning and afternoon. I was reading reactions while I was in the traffic jam.

Go to Twitter and you'll see some of the people that said that the Coastal Road is unnecessary. You'll see them complaining, insisting and appealing to government to open the completed sections of the Coastal Road. Some of them were able to go past the barriers and use the road anyway. These are the same people that say that the road is unnecessary.

See the reactions below.

This person took a picture of a soldier that is guarding the Coastal Road and she is complaining bitterly. She said that VI and Lekki were on lockdown, yet the soldier refused to open the Coastal Road. She said that a few people managed to pass, but the soldier refused to move the barriers and allow people to use the Coastal Road.

Gboyinde @gboyinAM

He completely misused it. When a place like VI/ Lekki is on gridlock, with one access in and out, one would expect that the alternative route would be open. This man, wish I got a clearer picture of him, refused to grant people access. He allowed only selected persons, such shame

Parents couldn't pick their children from school in time. I had to pick another child to meet the relative at AAHE because the parents were in traffic. But this man refused to allow Nigerians access to the coastal road. At this point it wasn't efficient anymore, it was wickedness

@Gidi_Traffic @jidesanwoolu can something be done about this? While the repairs on VI/Lekki Epe Expressway is ongoing, can the coastal road be opened for tax payers to get to work or to get home in the morning and evening? Can access be granted for 2hrs in the morning & evening?

@Gidi_Traffic @jidesanwoolu Today, one Nigerian decided to use his efficiency in a -ve way. Should we even call it efficiency or wickedness? The whole of VI/Lekki had gridlock and this man refused to open the coastal road for Nigerians to have access. Who gave him such authority?

I thought that the Coastal Road was unnecessary and a waste of money.

Re: Lekki Traffic: Lagosians Criticise Government For Not Opening The Coastal Road by naptu2(op): 5:26am On Sep 24, 2025
🤣

This person was a critic of the Coastal Road. However, he quoted a post that he made in May in which he said that if the Coastal Road is really like this, then he might have to apologise to somebody.

In yesterday's quote he wrote,

Orji Agwu Uka @OrjiUka

And the Coastal Road saves the day.
https://x.com/OrjiUka/status/1970611099360800895?t=Dm-jf8aTmT2hKKj0CfdyDw&s=19

(I guess he is one of the people that were able to use the road yesterday).

(I hope I can find the Okada tweet again).

@LASG @jidesanwoolu @followlastma

Why can't you just order that the coastal road be opened to allow people go to their houses.

It has been 4 damn man hours on the road and no hope in sight.

This is incredibly sad
https://x.com/LabelleFU/status/1970550421203959969?t=jlC67c00Sfn3rpdDZxVfiw&s=19

LASTMA @followlastma

The Coastal Road remains temporarily inaccessible due to the ongoing implementation of critical construction projects.

Prematurely opening the road to vehicular traffic would not only compromise the safety of motorists but also potentially impede the timely completion of the project.

In light of this, we respectfully solicit the understanding and patience of the commuting public.

Regular updates will be disseminated once the road has been deemed safe and is ready for public utilization.

If a govt does everything with transparency and honesty, nobody will suspect or blame such a govt, lack of trust is the reason for some of these issues sad
Re: Lekki Traffic: Lagosians Criticise Government For Not Opening The Coastal Road by SmartPolician: 5:55am On Sep 24, 2025
It was later opened in the evening of yesterday. I know someone who used it to avoid the Lekki holdup and "burst out" at Ikate. That's how she was able to get home to Ajah at 11pm yesterday. She left her office at 8pm.

Lagos is FULL! I don't know why the FG is not intentional about developing other cities to decongest Lagos. Better still, Lagos State should start running a 24/7 economy like other advanced cities. Everyone must not be going to work and going home at the same time.

Now IJGBs will start coming from November and December will be Jam packed in Lagos till last week of the year. The road should be made accessible to motorists during this period.

Lagos is damn too congested

I was in that traffic and I didn't see a single Dangote truck. Nobody said that it had anything to do with Dangote truck. Everybody knows why there was traffic (the rain), but go ahead and spin things. I won't read your reply.

I used the coastal road yesterday, and boy did that save the day for me?, yes it did. My boss left the office around 4, he lives in Peanock Estate, as at 9pm when I called him, he said he was still at the toll gate, lekki phase1.

No be small suffering people suffer yesterday.

Another day to remind you that in Lagos, having a car is not a luxury but a necessity, and getting an SUV will do you a whole of good.

This makes sense. Lagos is relatively safe, safest state(arguably). So having a 24/7 economy should be a no-brainer.

it's the same amount per kilometer that was used to construct other roads in the country. The amount for the other roads and railways were published in dollars but this was in naira to trigger the emotions of the easily manipulated Nigerian.

The media is a big problem in this country. This coastal road is one of the best if not the best project by this terrible administration.
Re: Lekki Traffic: Lagosians Criticise Government For Not Opening The Coastal Road by U09ce: 6:19am On Sep 24, 2025
True, the coastal road is strategic for Lagos. I criticise because of the way BAT went about it. Firstly, I feel it's deceptive to call it 'Lagos-Calabar coastal road' when the chance of the road connecting the two cities is very slim even in the next decade. There little wonder why we're yet to aggressive works at the Calabar end.
Secondly, the contracting procedure was terribly flawed to favor cronies of the president. Is Hitech competent? Yes. But follow the right steps to avoid setting bad precedents.
Thirdly, critical elements of projects like the Environment Impact Assessment and right of way acquisition were not completed before the job began.

Bunkum.
Why didn't Tinubu and Fashola build the coastal road for Lagos with Lagos resources when they were governors ?
He has to wait to become president, and has to use scarce resources to constructing a coastal road to Calabar when the East West road is yet to be completed.

Should this coastal road be used to ease traffic congestion in all other areas of Lagos where there is traffic congestion?

If traffic congestion is the reason why there must be a new coastal road from Lagos to calabar, apart from Lagos, are there any location within the Lagos calabar corridor where there is traffic congestion?
