Customs Generate ₦4.2 Billion In Less Than 3 Months At Ibeto Seaport by Editorialtimes(op): 11:34pm On Sep 23, 2025
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Area 5 Command at Ibeto Seaport and Terminal, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has recorded an impressive revenue generation of ₦4.2 billion in less than three months of operations.

The achievement, announced by Comptroller U.M. Abubakar, pioneer Area Controller of the command, has been widely applauded by stakeholders for boosting trade facilitation, blocking revenue leakages, and laying a solid foundation for the new command.

A Milestone in Revenue Generation

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Comptroller Abubakar expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for appointing her to the historic role.

She revealed that operations officially commenced on July 3, 2025, when the first SGD was captured. Since then, cargo throughput and revenue collection have grown steadily:

July 2025: ₦1,370,906,227.72 (DN ₦1,027,001.18)

August 2025: ₦1,953,127,882.04 (DN ₦35,241,583.18) – a 42.5% increase from July

September 1–12, 2025: ₦859,879,048.30 (DN ₦21,618,105.03)

Overall, from July 3 to September 9, 2025, the command generated ₦4,241,799,847.45.

“This remarkable growth underscores the huge potential of Ibeto Command and the commitment of all stakeholders,” Abubakar said.

Overcoming Initial Challenges

The Area Controller explained that setting up the new command came with hurdles such as infrastructure gaps, legacy overlaps with Area I Command, and welfare issues for officers.

“But with determination and the CGC’s policy thrusts of Collaboration, Consolidation, and Innovation, we turned obstacles into stepping stones,” she stated.

Stakeholders Laud Comptroller Abubakar

Stakeholders, including clearing and forwarding associations, praised the controller’s open-door policy and engagement style.

Chief Maduakor Chinonso, speaking on behalf of stakeholders, described her as “a mother to agents” and encouraged members to make Ibeto Seaport and Terminal a one-stop hub for shipping and clearing services.

The Area Controller also commended Chief Cletus Ibeto, Chairman of Ibeto Group, for providing vital support, including accommodation and welfare for officers during the command’s critical take-off phase.

Nigeria Customs’ Commitment to National Growth

Reaffirming the service’s role, Comptroller Abubakar said:

“I reaffirm that Customs remains committed to facilitating trade, ensuring compliance, and contributing to national revenue and development.”

She added that her greatest fulfilment will be leaving behind a strong foundation for her successors to build upon.

As close as portharcourt seaport to people but yet they come online to start crying give us seaport and we will leave Lagos and it will be empty. Why are they avoiding the seaport that is 100% functional and only pharmaceutical drugs are not allowed to pass through there because of proper monitoring may likely be defeated. On chest beating like thier brother who after telling to sue people but will not do when the people or person involved dare him to do it.

Wow! dis is huge, Kudos to dem ✌🏻
That IBETO PORT 2geda with IBOM PORT & ONNE PORT can service those major Markets in d S•E : Ariaria Intl, Onitsha Main Marine, Ochanja Intl, Nkwo-Nnewi... etc

• Those Ports shouldn't be heavily Censored unlike counterpart Apapa Port,
Gov should lift restrictions & "ALLOW" free & fair Importation, so dat S•E/S•S Importers don't have to source their Containers through Lagos anymore.

• Also all these ppl dat are locating their Businesses in Lagos just because of non-proximity inconvenience of Port, can now shift d Business to their area of choice.

☝🏼By dis action i believe it will drastically reduce Buildings Jampack, Fire Hazards, Omonile problem & all these Demolition Threats flying about.

• Summary: I believe dis will decentralize d Port system in Nigeria & Lagos will be decongested;
It will reduce d volume of Trucks plying d highways & there'll be lesser Traffic.

You should learn to research, don’t be a blind supporter. What kind of goods come in via the port? Ask how much it takes to clear there compared to Lagos. Many more questions would give you answers to why Lagos port is congested and other ports are less functional.

Every penny should be accounted for. A lot of government agencies generate lots of money, but the money can't be accounted for.

We can't continue like this in Nigeria.

God bless Nigeria 🇳🇬

People claimed they're from Israel and you underestimated the level of their greediness. Give them small space , they look for all avenue to push you of your own space to take over. Their plan is to have the whole Lagos as theirs and not the seaports . Not different from their Israeli brothers as they claimed .

Too much money daily generated in Nigeria from various sectors but hurriedly siphoned into privated pockets.
Which sane country makes such mad money but citizens wallow in abject penury, hunger, school drop outs, unemployment, and monumental suffering?
You tax importers at ports here x2 of the cost prize of same goods they bought abroad+ transport thereby making the selling price unaffordable to the people you have already impoverished, yet at the end that same custom levy and taxes goes back to the pocket of corrupt officials and politicians.

Remove all the administrative charges and regulations added by the federal government that make it costlier to clear your goods at eastern ports and watch folks leave in droves from your Lagos. Almost all ships berthing in Nigeria must first stop in Lagos ports before heading towards the east thereby adding to the amount in dollars quoted as your freight charges. That practice has been in place since 1966. All those administrative charges makes the cost of clearing goods in the east to be costlier when compared to containers cleared at Lagos.

Go to a good school, No. Use your data to read and study online, No

Is it the traders that direct the shipping companies on where to berth their ship in Nigeria? What is the work of NPA?

I hope we all understand that this announcement means Nigerians will be indirectly paying more for all goods imported via this port!
government institutions are not commercial enterprises that should be competing with incessant generation of revenue, especially in a country where the citizens rarely feel the impact of governance!!!!

imagine NNPC, CUSTOM, FIRS and so on keeps declaring bogus revenue generation on quarterly basis then the citizens feels its zero impact!

grin even if the government make the Ibeto seaport duty free for all easterners, you'll still complain 😂! You want seaport in south east, your major target market is Lagos and it's environ , so after importing, u still have to transport your goods to south west and north, so what exactly is the obsession for seaport bro , to me, it's just another lie that was sold to you guys by MNK

How is our "major target market" your Lagos when more than 65% of the containers that land in that same lagos are trucked (for almost the same amount of money used to bring them in from china) to Aba, Nnewi and Onitsha!?
Make it make sense naau...

I have already made up my mind on how best to deal with you Southwesterners who seem desperate to make sure nothing works in the east while wailing that igbo are swarming Lagos; if I ever find my way into serious policy making in Nigeria, I am going to make sure that I close all Lagos ports for like ten years..

That way, you guys from Lagos and Ibadan, Oshogbo, Ogbomosho and Okitipupa will then have to go down to Warri, Portharcourt, Calabar and co to clear your goods, pay millions to lorry drivers as (igbo business men do evevry single day) to truck those goods through all those miserable federal government roads in the east and get them to your (target markets) in the Southwest to compete with the rest of the country.

That's how best to fix your thinking patters; force you to experience it full blown..
That day will come and I am happy that you seem to have blown away any chance of having any other regions sympathising with you over this in the future..
What you attached is a pure lie. How many people are currently in South East?

65% of the containers with how many consumers in South East?

That data came from the federal government, not from me. Chew on it..You beleive there are nobody left in the south-east because of the fact that you gobble all sorts of rabid ethnic supremacists diatribes churned out by the mercenary Lagos ibadam express way media houses. According to their skewed narratives, no one is living in the east. Everyone there has ran to the beuriful Yoruba land. Keep believing that while the east thrives...

Your lawyers that went to Enugu for the NBA conference, all had some 'sombre moments' as was seen in their endless write ups thereafter. Mind you, Enugu is nowhere close to Abia in terms of rapid developments and urbanisation. Even Hope Uzodimgba that we lampoon here on daily basis, is better than most Southwest governors in terms of democratic dividends. Check out his new road constructions..

In essence, what matters is that the east is thriving and not what ethnic jingoists in Irigbaji or Oshogbo think..
