Iseyin. A small ancient town where a frustrated graduate who couldn't get an office job, decided to enter and start weaving cloth for ASO-OKE, using our ancient weaving technology, and is now earning millions. cool

Iseyin is in Ibadan, Oyo State, lol.

On a serious note, this was huge in my hometown of Ifon Osun in the 70s, but died off in the 80s. I once went to Mapo in Ibadan and was surprised how much Made in China there was, which made me think a lack of innovation is killing us as we don't evolve what we do.

You are WRONG. Traditional weaving is Traditional weaving.

Even in China there is traditional weaving that's very similar to this.

We also have modern textile factories in Nigeria.

The presence of traditional weaving does not signify stagnation or ''lack of innovation''.

Don't come and inject your negative mind here.

I think you have issues.

Aso oke weaving was huge in my family. People became doctors and professors on money their parents made from it, but now it's no more viable for us anymore, and I am glad it still thrives in Iseyin.

What does THAT have to do with anything?

Cheap Chinese imports have shut down businesses all over the world, including in America!!

Fashion tastes have also changed like you mentioned. Is that also the fault of the weavers?

Just leave them alone and stop criticising people working hard for a living and making money, ok?

How powerful do you think I am that comments I make in a thread on Nairaland affects anyone's hard work or how much they make?

And what makes you think you can command what anyone posts on a thread on Nairaland?

Look how you open your mouth waaaaah to display your ignorance.
The best and most expensive Aso-Oke are traditionally.
You see those rich folks at weddings that's what they were.

What you just did is like mocking Rolls Royce for their cars been hand crafted.

Exousiang01 claims only those who can afford Rolls Royce buy it now, when it was what everyone must have in the days. They even sent dansiki to my sister and I in London when born, and it pained me when I outgrew it and it was given away.

It's death in my home town is devastating. Jobs and skills were lost, and I almost wept when I saw Made in China in Mapo.

I'm currently fighting the development of land in front of my grandma's house because of my memory of the ofi made there when it was more like Datsun than Rolls Royce. But I guess some are happy that its "those rich folks at weddings" affording and wearing it now and not poor him.
