Doctors May Be Exempted From Trump’s $100k H-1B Visa Fee - Report by DiamondsAreFore(op): 8:09am On Sep 24, 2025
Doctors could be exempted from the new $100,000 fee for high-skilled US H-1B visa applications imposed by the Donald Trump administration, Bloomberg reports.

The executive order which was released Friday noted that the application fees can be waived if the secretary of Homeland Security determines that the hiring of these workers on an individual basis, or to work for a specific company or industry is “in the national interest”.

Citing an email from Taylor Rogers, a White House spokesperson, on Monday, Bloomberg reported that “the Proclamation allows for potential exemptions, which can include physicians and medical residents”.

The H-1B visa has served as a gateway for some of Nigeria’s brightest minds to enter the US workforce, acting as a crucial launchpad for building long-term careers in America.

Data from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services showed that tech, education, and medicine were among the top employment sectors for foreign skilled workers.

Amazon secured more than 10,000 H-1B visas in the first half of 2025, while Microsoft and Meta Platforms had more than 5,000 approvals each.

The programme allows for 65,000 visas annually, with an additional 20,000 for applicants with advanced degrees.

Nigeria was ranked 11th as the largest export of talents to the US and the first in Africa.

This guys will drive this high demand skills to other countries like Canada. I see more American companies giving more remote opportunities.

Trump fails to understand that legal migration is not the problem. They claim jobs are being stolen from Americans, but the data shows that it is those unskilled jobs, menial jobs that they’ve refused to do that is being impacted the most.

So you mean an actual spy would not be able to afford 100k?

If that’s the case they have failed with this target because the risk is still there.

Childish . Doing things without reasoning. Instead of first of all hold consultations before taking decisions. Making U.S look as if there's no leadership direction.

Who told u, na dem import doctor pass.

Over 9000 international medical graduates entered into residency program this year alone. 6000 of them are non US citizen.

250 thousand doctors working in USA are foreign graduates.

However, the pathway to qualify is gruelling and not for the faint hearted. U have to be good and serious to get thru.

My brother this is a typical example of serious brain drain. I don't blame DT, i blame our leaders and institutions for not creating a proper working environment for our experts.

Doctors usually apply under a different visa category. They apply under J-1 visa and not H1B.

Doctors should indeed be prioritised since they are essential workers, same way the GRE is essential.

Less than 300 Nigerians got it in 2024. Most Nigerian get their papers through marriage ( real and arrangee) and EB 1 visa . Another junk journalism

Its not more that they are in-demand..

Many occupations are essential workers. Nurses, engineers in power stations, pharmacists e.t.c

He's a known chicken that makes announcements but later back down.

Just like all his announcements.

He will just announce something and start rolling everything back because that thing will be too stpuid to implement.

Even a toddler isn't supposed to be rulling like this.

That's how Trump behaves. He takes actions without considering the consequences and later readjusts, just like the tariffs... grin

A lot of nurses in America come from the Philippines, Mexico, Nigeria etc, lol, their healthcare system would just collapse. 😂😂😂

I think PhD holders are in this context because how can a tech company Amazon take up 10,000 medical doctors in the first half of 2025? haba, its impossible to me. when it is not that it's a medical company or hospital. I guess they are referring to PhD holders too. My thought.
