Nonsense and ingredients. Even the FIRS boss himself won't pay any taxes if he has the chance. They only pay because the monies are deducted from their salaries. |

Smartcitizen:What are they hiding exactly? If I show you ten videos explaining the tax reforms explicitly, you will still ask same comment on another thread later today, tomorrow and even December. They should come and give you a presentation in your home regarding information that is everywhere and accessible ba? By their post we shall know them and it is amusing some of you think you can use the flimsiest of excuses to pretend you care about Nigeria or her progress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT8HMUaI9_s?si=k668GuKDZvHzF7AM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgtaQAmTBKg?si=8yazF5TgILdIjij3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MganE8JzPc4?si=frV9cwZ05O38JfkO |

My issue is that the tax categories were not well thought through. In Nigeria of today, a person earning 3m NGN annually is poor. That’s 8,219 NGN (5.5 USD) daily. Can you guys give a breakdown of how you came about those categories? In view of the cost of a basket of food and cost of living adjustments in the face of high inflation. 3M annually is taxed at 15% = 800000 + 2200000(minus 0.15) = 2,670,000 (or 222,500 per month) NGN. Note, there would be pension deduction, state tax, local government levies, association tax/levy, and other statutory payments. Then expenses… how does this individual pay fees, rent, energy, transportation and save? They should move the non-taxable category much higher and change it over time. |

The thing about taxes, is that it exposes two things 1.Government is not willing to diversify the economy 2.People are not ready to hold their government to account 3.Government is not serious about records 4.We are not ready to face the fact that revenue from 1.8 m bpd is not enough to pay for the needs of a nation of 230 million people. Yes, most nigerians do not pay taxes. If you don't believe me 1.PWC report 2016 2.Nigerians don't pay enough in tax 2019 Above are not government propaganda If you expect a nation that is on 10% tax per gdp ratio, and a low GDP...to provide services that a nation of 45-50% tax per gdp does, then you don't know how much APC and its predecessors have failed this country. Hold your government to account, instead of wasting time on this site. Yes, hold tinubu and the governors, but especially tinubu to account. Calling me names does not change that. |

WizardOfNG:I hate propaganda, just go to any of your state FIRS office and tell them you want to invite them to a radio or TV show for more live phone calls program on the tax reform and see what they will tell you. I'm not telling you what I'm not into , I'm telling you from a personal experience. Just try this and prove me wrong if I'm telling lies. 🤐🤐 |

Wahabfuture:LOL...the guy , despite probably being an APC supporter, is right. Many of you want the things developed countries have, forgetting that many developed countries have tax to gdp of over 30% , some as high as 50% Meanwhile we have a very low per capita GDP...even under GEJ, it was 2500 dollars . The big boys like Germany and denmark who give everything including electricity, and roads, and water to their people have gdp of 40000-50000 dollars., and they tax 30-50% of that. Also, less than 40% of nigerians pay tax. It was as low as 16% in 2016, 30% in 2019. You may complain about the taxes you pay, but the average nigerian does not pay income tax. (PLus the revenue from levies and so forth can't fund much, even if it wasn't stolen self) Nigeria has a tax to gdp of 10%, and 80% of our revenue comes from 1.8 million bpd of crude that is enough for a nation of 1million people, not 230 million nigerians. Even if we was really 100 million, it would still be paltry. That's why we are chronically in debt. And most subsaharan nations are like Nigeria. I'm serious. If we want to have goodies...tax most nigerians, and long term...fight corruption, fight corruption, and then transition to an economy based on manufactured goods and services, and yes, if we must vote out APC to get there, so be it. |

You're quite right but the big question is who can challenge a Nigerian government, in saner climes, judicial institutions, law makers and enforcers would help put the government in check, but dues same apply in our beloved country? WizardOfNG: |

PeterObi4Presid:How many Nigerians pay tax willingly and happily to the extent your sort are now all shouting the above? What money do you pay that is going down the gullet of politicians? We can agree many politicians steal allocation, inflate contracts etal but never you come here pretending to be a tax payer. Aside civil Servant, with tax deducted automatically from their wages, majority of Nigerians are tax Dodgers by nature. It says a lot about the propensity of scamming typifying the character of Nigerians that many of you are now coming to shout "they will embezzle our tax payment" and "our taxes built Lagos" and such nonsense. What a joke. |

WizardOfNG:Let's first talk about corruption of government and his workers Those who are paying now are they managing that one?? And why are their staffs aiding others that are not paying or paying what's due?? This is not rocket science, a government that have a penchant for unaccountability can never and will never be trusted with peoples taxes |
| Re: Don’t See Taxes As Punishment, FIRS Boss Tells Nigerians by Middleborn: 3:02pm On Sep 25, 2025 |
So we have corrupt politicians who are fantastically corrupt in political offices....They have shown us over the years that they can steal with impunity. The masses don't have anything to show for the resources that they own. There's nothing to show for the removal of subsidy. The president himself if very corrupt, his cabinet members are corrupt, the opposition party members are corrupt...the government offices will steal with every opportunity they get. Every government official has a price, they can be bought and APC wants Nigerians to believe the money that will be taxed will not be stolen, but will be used for Nigerians. I think that whoever brings these ideas is both wicked and stupid. Nigeria is one of the poverty capitals of the world, for crying out loud. Before you tax them, you have to make sure that you solve power (electricity), create Jobs, raise the minimum wage, bridge inequality and redistribute wealth, improve the criminal justice system and make policies that encourage successful re-entry. Why do they need taxes when we get so much from the oil? Maybe they want all the oil money for themselves. |

nairalanda1:Arguing over this issue is a waste of energy and time for me, why are you talking as if you don't know the money will be looted? I don't live in Nigeria and i pay taxes in the Country where i live, and I also enjoy the benefit of paying taxes. Insecurity all over Nigeria, no stable power or clean water. you still want to tax the poor masses when you know it will be looted. people are being killed in dozens everyday, security forces are not spared and nobody give a damn, all the Government cares is borrowing and tax to loot |

Okay. Let me agree with you for once. You know how to reason very logically. Kudos. I can say we pay little taxes, even if i know quite well dat we pay taxes though. But is it our fault? Is it not what we have dat we are going to give! Our government made us to be unproductive. nairalanda1: |

Had an encounter with some state tax operators last year, when I sat them down and told them my plight and why I don't ever think the government deserves my tax, they were nearly on their knees begging me. It's never about payment but it's about what you guys do with our taxes |
