Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Jubril Gawat, confirmed the demolition in a brief statement posted on his official social media handle.

The Lagos State Government began the demolition of what it described as “illegal developments and defective structures” at the popular Trade Fair Complex in Ojo Local Government Area on Thursday, sparking tension among traders and property owners.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Jubril Gawat, confirmed the demolition in a brief statement posted on his official social media handle.

“FLASH: Lagos State Government begins removal of illegal development, structures without statutory approvals and defective structures and structures built on road setback and drainages in the Trade Fair Complex, Ojo Local Government area,” Gawat wrote.

He further disclosed that the operation was jointly carried out by multiple state agencies, including the Office of the Lagos State Urban Development, Ministry of Physical Planning, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA), Office of Infrastructure, as well as members of the Lagos House of Assembly and armed security operatives.

Many netizens have also called on the government to fish out the officials who initially permitted the construction of the buildings and ensure they are all punished as prescribed.

For instance, an X user, King of Sley, said: “Start by punishing those that give approvals for these buildings. Una dey give just paracetamol to person with malaria. Solves nothing. Tomorrow those who claim to ve the plan & know the exact water ways will still give approvals and u blame the developers that r actual victims.”

Another user also wrote: “Taking this down without arresting the person who approved this structure is merely witch-hunting targeting specific individuals from a particular region. Where were the authority and all these agencies on ground today when the building was at the foundation level.”

Meanwhile, the state government earlier announced the collapse of a two-storey building at Mangoro bus stop in Alimosho Local Government Area on Wednesday evening.

At least six people reportedly sustained injuries in the incident.

Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, said one of the victims was pulled out alive but suffered a fracture and multiple bruises. He identified the injured man as a 44-year-old resident of 10 Olabode Street, Alimosho, who was immediately rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Surgical Emergency Unit for treatment.

“He arrived in stable condition and has since been admitted for further treatment,” Omotoso said in a statement.

Five other rescued victims were taken to a private hospital in the neighbourhood for medical care.

When the buildings are almost completed, they start to demolish.
What is the agency for buildings doing if they don't know their job? Who approved the buildings when they know it's going to cause an obstruction? These buildings were approved as far back as Obasanjo's administration. Why is Tinubu destroying them in his administration? Trade Fair complex belongs to the FG so I know what I'm saying

God one from LASG. Remember when illegal structures were demolished at Alaba rago, these people wailing now supported the demolition. And the people affected did not go to town screaming victimization. Now, your own illegal occupation have come home to roost.
Reminds me of a man, a very bitter Obidient who was giving thumbs up to Govt demolishing Alaba rago but when he was asked, he said Govt cannot touch Trade fair, if Govt touched trade fair, bla bla bla will happen. I want to see his power, thankfully, he will come on his show this evening.

Ignorance at its finest, as you can see, let's assume it was approved during OBJ regime, many of the buildings were still uncompleted, why were they left for so long becoming defective?. Moreso, they were erected on the water channels. Many of these buyers knows the land was illegal but they tried to bribe the officials to allow them continue the construction. Don't cry for me Argentina, let them dance to the music.

[color=royalblue]The buildings demolished today, were not approved under any Obasanjo regime.

The Trade fair market (Initially from Balogun to ASPAMDA), still remains the recognized market that was leased in the late 90s.

These demolished buildings are warehouses that people bought and built on. Those places used to be buffer zones for the market.

The question is who gave the approvals, as those buildings have being there for years. Even a bank was affected.

Dis buildings are Tax paying businesses dat generate revenue for d society & stimulates d Economy, & dat is what Lagos Government is destroying like dat.

Which one is built on gutter way keh ? Taaah! Guys enter TradeFair Complex & scout around & see for ur eyes... there's ample space provision for such.
→ But they don't wanna repair d road, & they didn't allow d Markets to do it by demselves.

I don't know why Lagos Government is always frustrating Igbo Business-Men.
B4 they commenced those building, dis ppl enquired, sort approval & went through processes,
& even d TradeFair Management Board collected money as well.

→ Why fold hands & wait for d building to be completion stage & u carry Mopol & Caterpillar & demolish it huh

• So if d Businesses are scraped off there, what now becomes of d place huh
I mean something of Economic value to d state.
→ But No beneficial will they do with it

Re: Lagos Demolishes Several Illegal and defective structures at Trade Fair (Photos) by Ablesam171:
If you like let your business be the only business that is generating revenue in Lagos State if it's illegal especially those sitting on waterways the building should be demolished by the government.
A clear example involves an acquaintance from the Southeast who wanted to build a house in Lagos. Unsure of the proper documentation process, he sought advice from a national VC of a trade union who happens to be the Chairman of Lagos State chapter of same trade union. Surprisingly, the official advised him to begin construction without permits and to simply "settle" any officials who tries to stop his work. I strongly cautioned against this, advising him to follow the legal procedure instead.

He heed to my advice and did the right thing though I'm not sure if he got all the required documents but i know for sure some he got like permit for his fence etc.

Fast forward this year, the government demolished houses to make way for construction of road. On his lane in the street, every building was partially or fully demolished except for 4 and his was one of them. Notably, all the other landlords whose buildings were affected are mostly Yoruba. Ironically, a significant portion of the union official's own house was also demolished.
Pay attention to details when building especially in Lagos State.
Don't let your stupidity cost you your hard earned money.
Nobody send you papa, dem go demolish your house and you no go do anything.

The last time I was at trade fair, the roads were nothing to write home about. The people who are familiar with the bad roads already had suvs and trucks.

Lagos state govt is know for non appearance and excuses when it comes to developmental issues but to demolish is their resume. Its backward thinking. That's not how to govern.
Re: Lagos Demolishes Several Illegal and defective structures at Trade Fair (Photos) by jaycruizenbs: 5:26pm On Sep 25, 2025
The person who approved the building she be taken to court also the Lagos state government should be taken to court for damages, is it easy to build now that building materials are expensive.

That's exactly what I had in mind, there seems to be no govt approvals and that also accounts for building collapse that seem to occur time to time.

Now go and look for P.O. grin

i remember being seriously frustrated at the extremely narrow roads in some places and wondering who allowed this to happen

the thinking usually is lets just go ahead with building - settle everyone and hopefully we would have made our money before any state govt oversight

They keep saying Lagos is dirty and flooded but when government carry their duties, wailers and bitter people will continue to cry victim mentality. In my estate here at Ajah, if not is a private estate, if government comes here, many houses will be demolished because they blocked the right of way and canals. Most houses at the ending part have all caved in. The so called developers who are mostly igbos built anyhow without regard to plan. They normally bribe most of the officials who comes around. I don't advice people to buy houses in island but buy land in estates and build your taste. Look at lekki with the high cost of building both in rent and buying but still withnessing flooding. To stop flooding in lekki axis, many houses have to give way and when government so that, same people will be the one to start saying nonsense. Sanwo olu is just too simple. They are lucky not governor like Oshiomohole, Obaseki and even okpeboho is the governor of lagos state, body for tell them.
