Dangote Refinery Says Few Workers Affected By Sackings, Over 3,000 Nigerians Still Employed

The management of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially responded to reports of mass layoffs, describing the action as an ongoing reorganisation exercise.

The company stressed that the move is aimed at safeguarding the facility and ensuring operational efficiency.

In a statement issued by the management on Friday, titled “Dangote Petroleum Refinery Reorganisation: Commitment to Safety, Integrity and Workers' Rights,” the refinery explained that the decision was necessitated by repeated acts of sabotage in some units of the facility, which posed serious safety risks and disrupted operations.

“The Dangote Petroleum Refinery wishes to clarify recent reports concerning the ongoing reorganisation within its facility. This exercise is not arbitrary. It has become necessary to safeguard the refinery from repeated acts of sabotage that have raised safety concerns and affected operational efficiency,” it said.

“The foregoing decision was taken in the best interest of the Refinery as result of intermittent cases of sabotage in the various units of the Refinery with dire consequences on human life and related safety concerns.”

The refinery stated that it remains vigilant regarding its internal systems and vulnerabilities to ensure the long-term stability of what it described as a strategic national asset.

According to the statement, protecting the refinery is crucial not just for Nigerians but also for Africa’s energy independence and the livelihoods of thousands of people who depend on it.

Management further assured that over 3,000 Nigerians are actively employed at the refinery, with only a “very small number” affected by the restructuring. It added that recruitment is ongoing through graduate trainee programmes and experienced hire processes.

Over 3,000 Nigerians continue to work actively in our Petroleum Refinery, at present. Only a very small number of staff were affected, as we continue to recruit Nigerian talent through our various graduate trainee programmes and experienced hire recruitment process,” it said.

“We recognise and uphold internationally accepted labour principles, including the right of every worker to freely decide whether or not to join a union. Our commitment to workers' rights is unwavering.”

Reaffirming its commitment to labour rights, the refinery stated that it recognises and upholds internationally accepted principles, including workers’ freedom to join or not to join unions.

“The Dangote Petroleum Refinery exists to serve Nigerians, to strengthen Africa's energy independence, and to create decent, sustainable jobs. We will continue to work in partnership with our employees, regulators, and stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of safety, transparency, and accountability,” the statement concluded.

Earlier, Daily Post reported that the refinery had dismissed all Nigerian workers less than 24 hours after 90% of them joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

The union's president, Festus Osifo, confirmed the development, stating, "Yes, it is true. We saw the letter late last night (Wednesday). I can assure you that they will recall all of them."

The injustice will sha reach everybody
A Nigerian employed Indians to be treating his fellow country people like thrash and people are here supporting it. Ask the working conditions of dangote's staff, nothing to write home about. No job security, no good insurance scheme

Now he doesn't also want them to join Union so Union will not start demanding that he treats his workers will

No wahala, the lawlessness and wickedness in this country will still reach everybody

Small education for you
Union is strictly there to protect the interest of its members so you can't just wake up tomorrow and sack them for nothing without realizing that you are putting them and all their dependents into hardship

What is happening with all these Lebanese and Chinese companies is pure slavery and that's dangote's model. Unionism is one of the major pillars of the UN ILO

You guys can keep supporting injustice, it will reach everybody

Point of correction
That Union has nothing to do with obstructing operations in the refinery unless their members are treated poorly
All the IOCs have that Union, it's still the Union that will look at inflation rate and tell employers to have mercy and increase salaries. They are the mouthpiece of workers who cannot go to their management and demand a better working condition

You really don't have idea what Union is all about, keep supporting the oppression, it will reach everybody and funny enough when you face yours, some people will be here to defend the oppressor

Union is strictly meant to protect its workers. Management of those refineries are not under union. Union is not meant to dabble into company's account and operating processes, they are not efcc, they are not dpr. They are there to ensure their members are given fair hearing before any sack, ensure welfare is at least minimum survival standards

Innoson workers and cosharis workers are under unions, but obviously I guess you don't know what Pengassan and I don't blame you though.

Re: Dangote Refinery: We Sacked Few Workers, Over 3,000 Nigerians Still Employed by owobokiri(m):
I don't see the gains of the Dangote refinery anymore. For me, progress and developments should be reflecting on the quality of lives of the people, and not solely based on computer generated numbers.

I can't see any significant dip in joblessness in the country.
I am not seeing any significant decrease in the pump prices of Petroleum products.
Neither am I seeing any significant rise in terms of the value of the naira following the latent ban on the importation of Petroleum products that was blamed for the scarcity of the dollar.

If there are no significant national improvements in these areas, why are we over celebrating the refinery as a success? Because our local ruthless capitalist is laughing to the bank? Dangote has always gotten away with forcing Nigerians to buy his stuffs at the highest prices while using his tentacles in government to discourage imports in sundry areas..

We were told that the pump prices of Petroleum products will seriously go down after this refinery comes full stream. The refinery is functioning optimally now and all we get are stories of the prices moving up and down within the margins of 10 to 30 naira differences, while the actual price for petrol stiffens around 1000 a litre...
Enough!
That is a rip off..

Dangote refinery only benefits Dangote and his fellow shylocks!

There are over 200 million of us Nigerians being milked dry by the federal government just to fatten this garrulous capitalist called Dangote..

Open which eyes..
Which cartel?
Is Dangote and Tinubu not part of the "Cartel" huh
Otedola that was given the sole right to import diesel at a point in this country, is he not Dangotes man Friday?

You guys should stop defending rubbish in the name of party and regional solidarity

Dangote does not want unions in his work place. Unions must exist there because he is a well known ruthless capitalist. He can not be allowed to be having his way on almost every issue..

Moreover, the banking, insurance, telecommunications, Petroleum/mining sectors used to be in the exclusive lists before privatisations... Part of the guidelines that led to the deregulation and commercialisation of these areas, stipulates the right for the workers to join unions...

Dangote is not his own country.
Business laws should apply to him too.
Last time I checked, it is the Federal Republic of Nigeria and not The Feudal Republic of Dangote..
Ahbegi..

The hypocrisy of unionism in Nigeria is glaring. We have millions of private school teachers working under worse conditions than any oil worker in Dangote Refinery, yet NUT has never gone on strike for even a day to demand that private schools allow their staff to unionize. But when it comes to oil, NUPENG and PENGASSAN suddenly remember their power. Why the selective activism? Is unionism only strong where the money flows?
