Dangote Refinery Suspends Petrol Sales In Naira by Islie(op): 8:01am On Sep 27, 2025
By Damilola Aina

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced the suspension of petrol sales in naira, a move that has unsettled marketers and raised fresh concerns about fuel pricing and foreign exchange pressure.

In an email sent to its customers at exactly 6:42 pm on Friday, the refinery disclosed that the decision would take effect from Sunday, September 28, 2025, citing the exhaustion of its crude-for-naira allocation as the reason.

The notice, signed by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals, was titled “Suspension of DPRP PMS Naira Sales – Effective 28th September 2025”.

The company also asked customers with ongoing naira-based transactions to formally request refunds.

It read in part, “We write to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward.

Kindly note that this suspension of Naira sales for PMS will be effective from Sunday, 28th of September, 2025. We will provide further updates regarding the resumption of supply once the situation has been resolved.

All customers with PMS transactions in Naira who would like a refund of their current payments should formally request the processing of their refund.”

The announcement comes at a time the refinery is embroiled in a bitter dispute with labour unions over the alleged mass sack of more than 800 Nigerian workers, a development that has triggered outrage and calls for government intervention.

This is not the first time the refinery has suspended local currency transactions. In March 2025, Dangote had briefly halted sales of refined products in naira, insisting that its allocations under the crude-for-naira programme were inadequate to meet growing domestic demand.

The decision then sparked concerns over the dollarisation of fuel sales in Nigeria, escalating prices at the pump to almost N1,000 per litre.

Analysts warn that the latest move could again trigger volatility in the downstream sector, with fears of a potential hike in petrol prices if transactions are shifted predominantly to dollars.

The Chief Executive Officer of Petroleumprice.ng, Jeremiah Olatide, warned that petrol prices could soar above N900 per litre, noting that the Dangote Refinery had been instrumental in keeping pump prices lower in recent months

The suspension also coincides with heightened industrial tension at the refinery. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria on Friday accused the company of anti-labour practices, following the termination of hundreds of Nigerian workers.

Union leaders have vowed to resist what they described as “an unjust and insensitive corporate decision,” threatening nationwide solidarity actions if the matter is not addressed.

With the refinery seen as critical to Nigeria’s energy security, stakeholders say the dual crises, naira sales suspension, and labour unrest could undermine government efforts to stabilise the fuel market under the current reform agenda.

grin

When Dangote doesn’t have his way like he has in the cement industry, then he creates a problem albeit an artificial one hoping to get all he wants his way.

Maybe tommorrow he will reduce the price of fuel and then next increase it to gain control and monopoly only for his own benefit.

Today, he wants to show you how the Naira and Union has become worthless which he does not need. Tommorrow he will sell in Naira as long everything goes in his favour, & then in Dollars if he does not have his greedy way.

The Union must stay whether Dangote like it or not.

cheesy

FG better wade in into this. This will create unnecessary demand for dollar which might cause scarcity as the opportunists would take advantage of it including the bankers

The govt is behind the problems Dangote is facing , govt cronies lead by their chairman are hell bent on continuing the fuel importation fraud ...

They don't want Dangote to have an idea of the true daily fuel consumption of the country which has been used to milk this country of 100s of billions of dollars

So, Dangote should source for dollars and import crude oil from overseas and then refine and sell to Nigerians in naira? Is he Father Christmas? Why is Tinubu failing to fully support Dangote by selling him crude in naira? That was an agreement he reached with the Buhari government before investing in a refinery. Nigeria's importation of less pure Malta-refined crude is still hitting astronomical numbers, while Dangote is constrained to export refined crude outside the country. No be juju be that?

P:S: Unrelated but Dangote should recind the sack of his workers and improve the working conditions of his refinery staff. Haba!

Before dangote sold the first litre of fuel I said it. I love the Man's business acumen oooo, but his refinery being a sigh of relief for Nigerians, impossible. He is too greedy for that

OK let's not yell them that due to maintenance, dangote will lose up to 50% productivity, therefore the best way to keep making profit is to hike fuel prices. OK ooo

Everyday one week one drama with dangote and his refinery. Oil business is not like the other businesses the man is into. If you think you have money, people there too have money, if its connections, they have it too.

Dangote just sell your oil in peace and stop creating problems where there are none. Nobody is competing the richest Blackman in the world with you!

I will continue to wish you all the best sir but you see that monopoly you are looking for in the oil industry, lie-lie you won't get it!

This is not time for blaming games. When would you people even be proffering solutions to things you have always been fuming about?

If this is not checked on time, it will cause dollar scarcity, fuel scarcity as there would be delay in sourcing for dollar, FX reserves likely to depreciate or dollar subsidization returns.

All can still be averted if FG can get involved and resolve the matter. Prevention is better than cure

Not even greedy parsa, but he wants to push other major marketers around. And this people he is trying to push around can match him money for money, connection for connection. grin

Imagine an average person like me who just venture into oil business and a very powerful Nigerian wants to kick my poor ass out. Haba isn't that wickedness. If I don't have anything to do, won't I become jobless and frustrated! undecided

Dangote should just focus on his business and allow other marketers breath.

Majority of Nigerians don't know the major reason why Binance was ejected from Nigeria

The fraud was simple. Place a big order on Binance trying to buy coins, take the invoice to bank to request for dollar and then cancel the order .

Those raked dollars are not even spent in Nigeria, they are laundered to another country for reselling. The FG had no choice than to be subsidizing dollar with Naira. We can't go back to that era.

This Dangote new move is not different from the Binance fraud as there would be more demand on dollar which all might not be genuine for petroleum orders

Oga stop dabbling into what you don't know. All these Dangote antics are just designed to frustrate other oil marketers. Some of us that are speaking out against it are not doing so because we don't like dangote. But we understand the negative effect it will have on the labour market if thousands of workers wake up one morning and realized they are not with their jobs anymore.

Abi can only Dangote refinery employ thousands of Nigerians working in various farm tanks, depots, filling stations, drivers, middlemen, etc?
Re: Dangote Refinery Suspends Petrol Sales In Naira by callmeDDD: 8:39am On Sep 27, 2025
I learnt that every time he bought crude oil from abroad, he does this. He has complained that they are not selling crude oil for him in naira. If he gets crude oil from Nigerian Market in naira, then he will sell to Nigerian marketers in naira. All still boil down to sabotage. What is wrong with nnpc selling crude oil to him in naira? He doesn't get his crude oil from Nigeria again. That is why FG should wade in and make sure he gets steady supply of naira denominated crude oil from NNPC and it should be constant. Every action shows that they are playing monopoly and sabotaging games that won't benefit a common man.

Make Una dey understand before Una condemn biko. Baba has been selling his petrol in Dollars since he built his refinery because he buys his raw material (Crude oil) in dollars, FG decided to start giving him crude in naira so he can sell to Nigerians in naira, but we know he still imports crude because NNPC don't have enough to give him. Now the allocation from NNPC is finished, do you still expect him to sell in Naira because he wants to please Nigerians? It's business not a charity. We should rather channel out energy towards government to renew the crude sales in Naira deal with him.
