Reno Omokri Was Never an Official Aide to President Goodluck Jonathan

It is often claimed that Reno Omokri served as a Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan. This is not true. At no point was he officially appointed by Jonathan in any capacity.

Reno’s link to the Presidency came through his relationship with the late Oronto Douglas, who was Jonathan’s Special Adviser on Research and Strategy. Reno acted more like a personal aide or associate to Oronto Douglas, not to the President.

Despite frequent mentions in the media and even on Wikipedia, Reno Omokri’s name never appeared on the official roster of Jonathan’s presidential appointees. The record, which is public, includes figures such as:

1. Oronto Douglas – Special Adviser on Research and Strategy

2. Senator Joy Emordi – Special Adviser on National Assembly Matters

3. Prof. Dan Adebiyi – Special Adviser on Special Duties

4. Mrs. Sarah Jibril – Special Adviser on Ethics and Values

5. Mr. Bashir Sufyan – Special Adviser on Legal Matters (Office of the Vice President)

6. Senator Isaiah Ballat – Special Adviser on Special Duties (Office of the Vice President)

7. Mr. Kingsley Kuku – Special Adviser on Niger Delta Affairs

8. Dr. Pius Olakunle Osunyikanmi – Special Adviser on International Relations

9. Dr. Asma’u Abdulkadir – Special Adviser on Gender Issues

9. Dr. Reuben Abati – Special Adviser on Media and Publicity

10. Dr. Tunji Olagunju – Special Adviser on NEPAD

11. Nze Sullivan Akachukwu Nwakpo – Special Adviser on Technical Matters

12. Mrs. Sarah Akuben Pane – Special Adviser on Social Development

All of these individuals were formally sworn in and gazetted as presidential advisers. Reno Omokri was not among them.

The facts are clear: Reno’s access to the Presidency came through his proximity to the late Oronto Douglas, not through any official appointment from Jonathan. Over time, he may have styled himself as a “Special Assistant to the President,” but without a portfolio, swearing-in, or gazette, such a title cannot be sustained.

For historical accuracy, Nigerians should recognize the distinction. Reno Omokri was never an official aide to President Goodluck Jonathan. At best, he was an assistant to Oronto Douglas. Anything beyond that misleads the public and distorts the record of Jonathan’s government.

Reno Omokri was the Special Assistant to the President on New Media and that was not the first time that he was working at the Aso Rock Villa. He also served in the Olusegun Obasanjo Administration.

Jonathan: I Didn’t Sack Reno Omokri

Former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said that he did not sack his erstwhile Special Assistant on New Media, Reno Omokri.

Jonathan, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Mr Ikechukwu Eze said Omokri served him till May 29, 2015 when he ceased to be president.

The statement said: “For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state that at no time did former President Jonathan ever sack Mr. Omokri while he was in office.

“Mr. Omokri was appointed on August 17, 2011, and served meritoriously until May 29, 2015.
“His record of service can be verified at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“While he is no longer a staff of President Jonathan, Mr. Omokri enjoys the gratitude of many Nigerians including Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for his patriotic services to Nigeria.”
