Good afternoon Quick Honest question; I feel coming here to ask this question would give me better answers than searching on google. What’s the purpose of having a traditional ruler, like a king in a local government or in a state, when we already have governors presiding over that state? |

Celestialsword:And indeed it does. nnadychuks, it's tradition. As in, we've forever had them, and built institutions around them that enable our communities to function as they do. Depending on the strength of an oba, they resolve conflict that is too small for other institutions or that the complainant is too small for, or those outsiders might not understand cultural nuances and just make worse if involved. And for their own glory, they usually endeavour for communal growth that benefits their kingdom and people. In the end it's not a 'why' question. It's just how we roll. |

For the preservation of local norms, culture, and tradition. I would argue that it's the latter that has no significance in the lives of people.

nnadychuks:A king of a kingdom or an emir of an Emirate are more closer to the people,he lives among them,he knows all their challenges. These he passes to the LGA,who also forward them to the state government. Kings are recognized by the state, under the chieftaincy act, hence, they are presented with staff of office . it's also an arm of government |

King is the Custodian of the people. The true leadership of the people. Governors and presidents are just democratic elected individuals for some times to oversee the societies. You can see even in kingdom, they do have other minor political posts like the Youth chairman, community chairman and others. Those are also political posts within the settings of the society that are not traditional but rarely recognised by the wider society. We can not as a people abolished the kingship system or else, our society will be forever doom. We are homogenous and can not practice liberally like USA. Check countries like Japan, France, UK (Canada, New Zealand and Australia under British king) Thailand, Arab Countries and many more still under kingship. The kings keep the society moving with cultures, norms, unwritten laws and traditions and way of life of the people that can not be easily broken. But in democracy like the Presidents and Governors under the present world order, it can be trampled upon and the society will be broken the more and lost. |

Russia, China and many Eastern countries are rejecting the US system of government because they know more but African countries will be jubilating that they want US ways. |

Kdon2:Let’s say your tribe is better than Igbo. What about you personally? Can u look within your community where you live and say igbos aren’t the most successful where you are? Simple question, you’ve targeted an ethnic group. What’s wrong with you people? |

nnadychuks:A local government chairman is the chief security officer of the local government and any decisions taken by him is binding in all kingdoms under his domain but that of the King is not so. The local government chairman hold more authority |

nnadychuks:As in my Orolu Kingdom of Ifon Osun appointing a king from our neighbour in Ilobu we are killing? That's not possible because the post is hereditary. You have to come from the family of obas to be eligible. So even my own family that is not oba family can not be oba much less another ethnicity. Saying that though, England did go and drag complete foreigners from another country to come and king them, and ethnically different Greeks and Romans did once sort of king Egypt, so I wouldn't call it madness, considering. It's just the way things have ended where obas are, I suppose.

nnadychuks:Its really unfortunate how the Southwest people have descended so low such that every discussion to them now must be measured with tribe. Unfortunately for the people like that op, when I lived fulltime in Lagos, I was the bedrock of my estate and LCDA that was more of Yorubas. I brought 60% of the money we used to install our estate street lights. I contributed immensely during our estate road repairs. I was among the EXCOS that oversaw the estate and made sure we had topnotch security for all the estate residents. In my local Church then which was also a Yoruba dominant Church, I wouldn't want to talk much about this because it has to do with God. One of the streets in our estate, it was a very rich Igbo man that single handedly installed the street lights. Igbos made that estate whatever it is despite it being a Yoruba majority estate. But unfortunately Yoruba people like the one you quoted always forget all these wonderful things Igbos have been doing in their region and in their communities all because of one man's ill and selfish ambition, it is well sha |

nnadychuks:Most of the so call successful ibos are into criminality big time. That's what we don't do in my tribe. We don't do that oind of success. Success is relative if you try to understand it deeply. |

If the government is serious. They should give the kings/baales (town/village chiefs) the job of a mayor since in reality the city’s/Towns/Villages belong to them and they will do everything possible to develop their domain rather than going to the government house every now and then to beg/lobby and call the government attention to developments they need in their domains. |

Celestialsword:Not in the Orolu Local Government of the Orolu Kingdom of Ifon Osun does the local government chairman have more authority than our Oba! That might be because our local government belongs to our kingdom which is the Oba's domain. In fact, our local government can't go against our Oba, and must consult his office before imposing anything on the kingdom, unless it's the state government that is imposing, in which case the governor would have consulted the obas or is governing very ineffectively. |
