On my last post about how phones start overheating and lagging after some months, one of the comments stood out to me. The person mentioned that he once fixed his own phone by watching a YouTube video and surprisingly, it worked. That really caught my attention. It made me wonder: how many people out there have actually tried repairing their own phones instead of taking them to a technician? Is this something more Nigerians are doing quietly, or was that just a lucky story? Let’s be honest, the phone repair scene in Nigeria can be frustrating. You take your phone to a so-called engineer to fix a charging issue, and by the time you collect it, another part suddenly stops working. Sometimes, you even pay for what you were told is an “original” replacement, only to realize later that it’s a cheap copy. Many of us have lost phones not because of the initial fault, but because of careless or greedy technicians who made things worse. So it’s not surprising that people are beginning to say, “Let me just do it myself.” With YouTube, almost anything seems possible now. You can search “how to replace a broken screen,” “how to fix a charging port,” or “how to flash a dead Android,” and you’ll find step-by-step guides with millions of views. Some of these tutorials make it look so easy that even people who’ve never held a screwdriver start feeling confident. But while some have successfully fixed their phones and even gained a new skill, others have ended up regretting it, especially when one small mistake like tearing a flex cable or overheating a board completely kills the device. And here’s the funny part: once you open your phone yourself, most technicians don’t even want to touch it again. They’ll say “you don spoil am finish,” or “person don tamper the board.” So even if you later change your mind and want help, you might be on your own. It becomes a gamble, you either save money and feel proud of your DIY skills, or you lose your phone entirely and realize why professionals exist. But then again, are these so-called “professionals” really trustworthy anymore? Many people will argue that some of them are just as experimental as the average YouTuber. Others feel that, with the right guide and tools, anyone can fix simple issues like replacing a screen, cleaning a charging port, or swapping a battery. Maybe we just need the confidence to try, or maybe we’re underestimating how technical these repairs really are. That’s why I want to throw this question open: 👉 Have you ever tried repairing your phone by watching YouTube tutorials? Did it go well, or did things fall apart? And if you haven’t tried, would you ever consider it, especially given how unpredictable technicians can be these days? Let’s share real experiences; both the success stories and the disasters. Because honestly, the way repair costs and risks are going, DIY might soon become a survival skill for every smartphone user in Nigeria. |

Well I can do other things like software issues with YouTube but anything hardware issues I prefer taking it to an engineer. What works for A might not work for B |
