The guy I quoted then spoke of unions in general, I responded to the last two paragraphs about how unions in Nigeria foist an unrealistic economy through price fixing.

If you start selling and don't join a union, issues.

If you joined the union, but your price is lower than the union agreed price, problem.

How then can someone who can produce or source cheaper and wants to dispose of the product faster compete in such a market?

Clearly he or she can't because he must not be seen to undercut the union even though that is a clear abuse of the power to and right to associate

That is the issue unions don't seem to know the limits of their powers in Nigeria especially those unions built around selling this or that.

My point is simple: while they often do, there is no law that empowers unions to regulate prices in Nigeria and that in plain English is union overreach that we have become so accustomed to that we act like it is normal.

Since the FG has obviously abdicated its responsibility of checkmating these rogue unions, then let Nigeria die a natural death.

These unions seem bigger than the country and can afford to shut down the country whenever and however they like each time.

When have they fought for the long queues, fake fuel, high price of petrol etc. syphoning subsidy monies with their counterpart in government for the petroleum sector not to be liberated. It's not every University that is Under ASUU and They're not fighting those private universities to join them by all means even FG staffs are not all under unions... It's voluntarily and not mandatory. Those 800;workers should all go to PENGASSAN, let them employ them period...

NURTW is the Trade Union of Road Transport Workers in Nigeria, but you don't see them go after GOD IS GOOD, GUO, EKESON and the likes, even if they are in the Transportation business, their drivers don't also join any Union.

NUT is the Trade Union of Teachers in Primary and Secondary School, but you don't see them go after Chrisland College, Grange School, Charterhouse Lagos, British International College and tell the teachers to join them.

But you think it is ok for Dangote to build a Refinery solving all our collective petroleum imports problems, and then, allow PENGASSAN to dictate to him and shut down his Refinery whenever they feel like.

I think any Refinery worker that is not happy at Dangote Refinery and needs the Union to help him, should seek employment somewhere else, or take Dangote to court.

I support your statement and that's my opinion too. This is a part of what kills the country. There must be freedom of association as stated in the constitution. Almost every sector in Nigeria has association and they will force you to join whereas the law did not say it's a must. Association of pepper sellers, association of garri sellers, barbers, beggars, e.t.c. Maybe there will be association of those without any association in future. The day forceful association is scrapped, Nigeria will move forward. Bodies can be formed to enforce favourable conditions for all but not forcing anyone to join an association.The law says I can choose my association and I say I don't like your association but you say I must like it.
