At that age his sight might not be too good and he has many important things on his mind.
Don't stress him any android/iOS that are guaranteed to come with apps eg: Phoenix Browser that will be sending 200+ USELESS notifications, disturbing his peace, consuming useless data...for useless apps.
All these phones are for young, tech crazy adults. Not elderly cool collected men.
Where is he going?
Who is he posing for?
If he can't think of a phone himself, he is definitely not technology crazy. He wants peace of mind .

Get him simple phone..Nokia 3310 or some other flip phone with Whatsapp installed.

That people are really cracking their heads over the phone to get an 85 year old is the funny part. You children really don’t have productive means of spending your time. Last last, OP will get him the same phone or a slightly upgraded version. All your suggestions will be trashed.

Redmi A5 is perfect for him. It costs around 100k.

But if you want him to use a button phone, then go for Tecno button phones. They are more impressive than Nokia button phones.

Just get him one of those Redmi or Tecno with strong battery life, so the man can continue what he loves doing.

He doesn't need a handset, they is nothing he wants to hear that he hasn't heard before.

Hire a trusted carer for him that will care and support him. That's his HANDSET.

Get him something with the following specs:
Has radio that is easy to use by old people
Has bold keypad that is legible enough with wide screen in case he has sight issues or can't see tiny letters
That has games or stuffs that can also keep him from boredom

Something that is easy to operate sha

Now I dont know what type of fits my specs but just try sha
