The crisis between Dangote and PENGASSAN has lingered for over a month. And just when you think the matter has been settled, a new dimension to it emerges. In the heart of the crisis is the fact that PENGASSAN wants Dangote refinery workers to be unionized while Dangote opposes the idea. And the question is why? Why doesn’t Dangote want his Refinery workers unionized? Is it because he wants to be exploited them as he wants without anyone to question him or what? Because if the argument is about Dangote Refinery being a private establishment, then remember that all commercial Banks in Nigeria are privately owned but their workers are members of the sector’s union. All Commercial Airlines in Nigeria are privately owned yet their workers belong to the sector’s union. Why should Dangote Refinery case be different? |

If u want to do union in a private business then u need to be flogged and sacked. Then go create ur own business and do what ever u like in it.It is even his fault for employing such kind of person in the first instance. If he didn't employ u,will u be telling him rubbish in his business |

Streetinvestor2:Are you conversant with Labour Law? The fact that when an organization is up to a certain designation, some certain things apply to it? Like payment of minimum wage and all? Again, have you checked similar Refineries in Belgium and other parts of Europe if their workers are not unionized? |

The Unions in the NNPC refineries, how did they fared? What did they achieve other than destroying the refineries, what will they achieve for Dangote refinery? If they are not satisfied with his condition of employment, they should find work elsewhere |

My stand is not against the union. However, PENGASSAN has most of the time brought negativity to the general citizenry of Nigeria. They don't tell you the truth; they lie a lot. If Dangote did not react in this harsh way, they would gang up and sabotage his refinery. Dangote should encourage his staff not to join PENGASSAN but to form their own in-house union and anchor it to the Nigeria Labour Congress, another very useless and overrated organization. For me, I don't need all this stress; all I need is fuel. |

Remember that there are private universities which employ people too. The employee dont join unions. What is the essence of union that is not of benefit to the average Nigerian. An employer is not under a single obligation to explain the reason why he sacks his employee as you a court cannot force an employee on an unwilling employer. All an employer needs to do is to ensure that the sacking is in line with the provision of the employment contract. What is the essence of union that is not of benefit to the average Nigerian. What has the union ever done to ensure the state's refineries are working all these years? Dangote is only doing this to ensure that they do not disrupt and run down his refinery the same way they did to those of Nigeria. Someone in the know of all their workings (Otedola) has been giving revelation upon revelation of how corrupt all these unions are and not a single one of them has been able to contradict him. |

Streetinvestor2:People assert the wrong thing and they do so with amazing confidence Business in general is private nearly all business in Nigeria is private and they are unionised Let us take PENGASSAN Where do they work SHELL,MOBIL CHEVRON AGIP, OANDO,TOTAL,SEPLAT THEY ARE PRIVATE You heard someone say something and with zero understanding go about repeating with confidence something you know nothing about Pilot's have a union. Are they government workers? Are bankers government workers? Do they have a union Think first talk next or better think first and stay silent |

It's not about being private or public Company. It's about the fact that PENGASSAN can wake up overnight and call for a strike on something Dangote knows nothing about. Look at the present situation which is a case in point. Did NNPC, Shell, Chevron, Agip, or NGC sack their workers or have any issue with PENGASSAN? No. So why did PENGASSAN shut down those companies? Are these companies not loosing money presently due to the strike? Yes they are. Dangote doesn't want someone sitting at some beer parlour somewhere to dictate how his $20 billion refinery is operated. They're not shareholders of the refinery, so why will they dictate when the refinery should be closed or opened! |

Penguin2:why didn't you and your family build a refinery and make sure PENGASSAN and NUPENG take control of your your staff |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by Streetinvestor2: 11:11pm On Sep 30, 2025 |
aribisala0:If u don't know anything. U just keep quiet. Who told those companies are private like dangota They are joint venture with the government. In some of them government has larger percentage. Dangote is mostly over 90 % private. Which useless union operates in New generation banks.U can see whr ur union placed banks like union bank and first bank today. And is not long first bank sacked workers because the new ceo is trying to turn things around in the bank. The same unions destroyed the government refineries till date |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by Streetinvestor2: 11:20pm On Sep 30, 2025 |
Penguin2:Does the labour law determine for the ceo who to hire and fire.Does the labour law determine the down sizing or right sizing of staff for a private business. If he desires to close the refinery tomorrow. Does the labour law stop him. Did u hear the workers claim they whr denied of thr salaries or entitlements. What do u know about labour law.let the union go provide work for them as they have been sacked. |

Dangote is an adept businessman who knows the antics of the economic saboteurs who don't mean well for this country. Ask yourself: of what use has PENGASSAN and her affiliates been to our FG owned refineries over the years? Dangote cannot afford to give room to these shameless rogues so that they don't spread doom to his multi-billion dollar brand new refinery. Okay? @hotseat |

Carazon:Say what you know bross Every Nigerian Doctor is a member of the NMA. The thing is NMA rarely embark on industrial action because the outcome would be catastrophic. It is NMA affiliates that go on strike most of the time |

Carazon:Go start ur own business in a new sector. Nigerians will be happy u have monopoly in that sector. As long as it will create employment. U type does not see effort from a man like u who does not have two heads. |

Streetinvestor2:There are 2 types of Joint Venture Unincorporated Joint Ventures (UJVs) — Most Common in Nigeria This is the dominant structure in Nigeria's oil and gas industry, where international oil companies (IOCs) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) collaborate. The JV is not a separate legal entity. Each party holds a participating interest and contributes resources based on agreed percentages. Profits, losses, and production are shared accordingly. Example: The joint ventures between NNPC and companies like Shell (SPDC), Chevron, or TotalEnergies are typically unincorporated. The other is incorporated If the JV IS UNINCORPORATED IT Is not a legal person People like you don't know, you don't know that you don't know and you believe you know everything It is a genuine tragedy |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by Streetinvestor2: 11:55pm On Sep 30, 2025 |
aribisala0:Tell us the private entity who owns the nnpc u just mentioned in the JV. While dangota refinery is owned by dangota. The dead refineries that the unions have destroyed is owned by government via nnpc. U don't know jack.Dangote refinery is owned by the man who invested over 20 billion dollars in it.Your union can not be allowed in such business. He has sacked them and ur union can not bring them back even government because it is within his rights as business owner. What has stopped the union all this yrs to pull fund together to build thr own refinery as they whr benefiting from importation. The leaders need to be jailed |

yarimo:Thank you very much. These people are allergic to good things. All they want is chaos! All they know is destabilize a working economy. They only know how to destroy what they can not build. Later they will say Nigeria is not working. Too much of leniency is bad sometimes. |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by aribisala0(m): 5:08am On Oct 01, 2025 |
Streetinvestor2:You were wrong admit it Stop changing the goal post I The point is A JOINT VENTURE IN NIGERIA IS NOT INCORPORATED The employer is not NNPC but SHELL, MOBIL CHEVRON AGIP etc Those companies are bigger than Dangote Those companies are private companies Their workers have been members of PENGASSAN for decades So stop making ignorant noise about Private companies or Joint ventures You have no clue |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by flokii: 5:29am On Oct 01, 2025 |
To cover up his attrocities.. he doesn't want unions to expose his dealings because they will be eyes and ears of their national body at his refinery. 2. He intends to use the Nigerian workers in his refinery as slaves while he pays illiterate Indians high salaries. Imagine a Nigerian Engineer earning far below an Indian technician/labourer without degree. The unions would definitely not allow such, reason he wants to shut them off his refinery. |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by anyilalaz: 5:55am On Oct 01, 2025 |
Because any refinery with union ends up running aground. Like PH, Warri and Kaduna. |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by anyilalaz: 6:00am On Oct 01, 2025 |
Penguin2:No need to go far like Belgium and other parts of Europe, because I have never been there. Let's bring it home, the following refineries has union and till today, there yet to refine a drum of crude: PH, Warri and Kaduna refineries. Most annoying thing is that these guys are collecting salaries and different allowances. |

If you open your business allow Union run am down, because you think say any union get your interest in heart? |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by franugo(m): 6:36am On Oct 01, 2025 |
Penguin2:Firstly, bankers do not go on strike when NLC does, they're not really serious members of any group. Now let's use this nupeng/pengassan strike as an example, the local content in my resident state has closed shop because of the strike, something that's happening in Lagos, affecting all states of the federation. Now imagine that dangote staff are all members of the union and a strike is called in the future for an issue with shell or Chevron, the workers would down tools because of a situation dangote has no hand in and cannot control, his refinery suffers. For a private business, fear of unions is a valid response honestly. |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by franugo(m): 6:43am On Oct 01, 2025 |
Penguin2:Are you insinuating that dangote does not pay minimum wage? There's nothing wrong with dangote not wanting his staff to join a union, it's a valid response for private employers, you'll hardly see any private employer happy to have his staff unionized |
| Re: Why Is Dangote Against The Unionization Of His Refinery Workers? by franugo(m): 6:51am On Oct 01, 2025 |
aribisala0:Bankers do not down tools when nlc declares a strike, pilots also do not download tools. No private employer worth his salt will allow his staff to join a union that can hamper his business. Pengassan strike is currently hampering business for the employers you mentioned because their staff have downed tools, this is what dangote is trying to avoid in the future, I'm not sure why you guys can't see it. Those employers aren't refineries, a refinery cannot handle staff downing their tools, it's much better for dangote to resolve the issue now by replacing the unionized staff instead of waiting till they down tools in the future at an inopportune time because pengassan has an issue with another employer |

franugo:Irrelevant and emotional You need to learn how to debate on issues I don't care what Dangote is trying to avoid What does the Nigerian constitution say If you are playing a game you stick to the rules What are the issues What are the rules Under Nigerian law can an employer say to his employees You cannot join a union and if you do I will sack you yes or no? |
