President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform chief, Taiwo Oyedele, has declared that all Nigerians, including women engaged in prostitution, popularly called “runs,” and individuals involved in illegal dealings, will be required to pay tax once the new reforms take effect in January 2026, News360 Nigeria reports.

Oyedele, who heads the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policies and Reforms, made this known while addressing members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, City of David parish in Lagos, over the weekend.

He explained that the new law, signed by President Tinubu in June, mandates taxation on all income without distinguishing whether the source is lawful or illicit.

“In the eyes of the law, income is income,” he said.

“If somebody is doing run girls, they go and look for men to sleep with; you know that’s a service. They will pay tax on it.”

According to Oyedele, the reforms were designed to ensure that every service or transaction rendered for money, regardless of legality, falls under the taxable bracket.

He emphasised that the law itself does not have the mechanism to separate legitimate earnings from illegitimate ones, hence all income is deemed taxable.

The reforms, he noted, are part of efforts to widen Nigeria’s tax base and improve government revenue generation ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.

You need to understand the difference between a crime and misdemeanour... prostitutes don't affect anyone with their prostitution. Prostitution is not recognised by the constitution but it's not a criminal offence. Seems you lack comprehension... understand the law stop sounding unlearned.

Stop displaying this level of ignorance in a public forum. If you know a lawyer, call the person and ask him if prostitution is legalized in Nigeria. Nigeria is a country that outlaws prostitution just like gay marriages.

In fact, the government hasn't been stringent in enforcing that law because the authorities also patronize prostitutes. Prostitution is not a bad behaviour in Nigeria; it's clearly illegal and disallowed. Yes, prostitution is a criminal offence in Nigeria.

People don't seem to understand that if this absurd statement holds true, it really has nothing to do with prostitution. It simply means that any money transferred to any account will be seen as income and taxed. If I send 100k to my house help to go to the market it will be seen as his income and taxed. If you dash 50k to your mother it will be seen as income and taxed. If you send a cash gift to anyone by transfer it would be seen as income and taxed. That is what this means, if his statement holds.

Probably. I also dont believe any such thing will be implemented.

But Oyedele is really an embarrassment. How can he say no distinction between legal and illegal income. Is he suggesting money from armed robbery, kidnapping, murder for hire, etc, should all be taxed?

It's certain that some of the tax policies may encourage cash transaction thereby impacting on cashless society. If I don't bank how will they track my income earned out outside formal transaction? For example, drug business often based on cash dealings.
